What if the aliens in *The Abyss* weren't friendly? The result is this sweeping eco-disaster thriller that makes for a delightful (if a bit bloated) binge-read. The characters are a somewhat flat (only the Inuit cetologist seems to have any depth, and the novel has to remove him from the action to a personal side-quest to establish and resolve that), but that suits this story that draws its inspiration from Big Disaster Cinema, which it namechecks throughout. Very poor pseudo-scifi novel, with a weak plot and shallow characters, by a German-who-wants-to-be-American author. To be as fair as humanly possible, the first 50% of the book (I read the Kinde edition) is readable and even more or less enjoyable. But then the author fills pages and pages with long and foolish babble of meetings of representatives of the US government (including the president himself, a portrayed religious fanatic). Scientists are portrayed as nothing more than a bunch of tamed thinking machines, which start happily working for the millitary and intelligence community without complaints, discussion and organized (or even personal) resistance to being literally kept as prisioners in a luxury hotel, working on a 24x7 basis at the service of the millitary. Even the few European scientists depicted in the novel are happy to this (and, of course, Africa, Asia, and Latin America do not exist as part of the scientific community in Herr Schatizing's world). Environmental activists, in turn, are pictured as ust a pack of losers and crazy people, not to be taken seriously by anyone (except by a media that, in this novel, is kept in silence by the millitary even in the face of a tsunami very orders of magnitude higher than that of the Indian Ocean!). In short, this is a complete waste of reading time, that can best be put into a really serious sci-fi author as Kim Stanley Robinson, for example (who, despite being American, is more able to portray realistic Europen characters than Herr Schatzing).

Technically a DNF (Did Not Finish) but after 300 pages it felt like I read a whole book. ;)

Wrote a blog post about my struggle with this one: https://wildmoobooks.com/2018/05/09/dnf-from-my-tbr2018rbr-challenge/
