In non-fiction, I looked through if I did not read Happiness is a Warm Puppy (was it prose or all cartoons?). I read Travels with Charley and enjoyed it a lot. I always wondered what happened to Charley. ... book group.

The nonfiction book I was reading at the same time was Travels with Charlie about the 1960 trip Steinbeck took to “explore America.” In Earth Abides the protagonist, Ish, takes a cross country trip to see what has ... I'm not sure which one I'll tackle next. I did enjoy Travels with Charley, partly because it's an interesting snapshot of 60s North America but it is also a great memoir (as all great travelogues should be!). Steinbeck does have a ... Claire ~~ I'd recommend The Red Pony over the The Pearl but I really haven't read much Steinbeck. I finished Travels With Charley by John Steinbeck. It's one of his later books and it's non-fiction. I enjoyed it. I've been reading The Survivor:Bill Clinton in the White House by John F. Harris. It's a fair well-researched examination of his presidency.
Please don't mention this to R ... Regarding my heart before my head; Steinbeck: Begin with something short and light. Travels With Charlie, Cannery Row, Tortilla Flat, and of course The Red Pony would all be good starting places. I would even put The Red Pony in the hands of my 11 year old grandson at this point ... #122 How true, brenzi, how true!

The paperback is an older copy and the pages have a musty smell. I may have to run to the liberry and grab a less odious version. Thanks for the Steinbeck direction. I only thought about Travels with Charley because, well, I have it on my shelf (I purchased it for a course on travel writing and never actually read it...).
We were assigned The Grapes of Wrath as juniors, and I didn't make it very far into the novel ... ... Grapes of Wrath as that is one of his more difficult works to connect with, though it is one of his greatest. Though, Travels with Charley would give you no grief, I am not sure it would hold the same emotional connection opportunity you're looking for with Steinbeck. Try one of the other ... I just started Travels with Charley - I cannot believe it's my first Steinbeck. So far so good, and if I really enjoy it like I expect, I will have to get the book of short novels ASAP! ... in Steinbeck for about 3 days - this is a terrific collection of his short novels and I enjoyed them; I had only read Travels with Charley and The Moon is Down by Steinbeck prior to this; my favorite, was Tortilla Flat, but I enjoyed all of the novels in the collection; highly ... 2) By and about Steinbeck (just can't leave him out):

Steinbeck rocks, obviously. Though he is a favorite, I haven't gotten a copy of Travels with Charley. Have to remedy that sometime. Added Earth Abides to my look out list!

I couldn't really decide between 4 and 4.5 stars. I found this book deceptively simple and straightforward in presentation. It reads like it was written by an average guy (admittedly a very well spoken average guy) and not a Nobel winner ... Book 65:

#60: Mac, thank you for the suggestions. So far, the only books by Steinbeck I have read are The Moon is Down and Travels with Charley. I was thinking of trying Of Mice and Men next.

I must admit that I have not read The Moon is Down and have added it to the Wishlist. Thank you for the recommendation Too, too many to choose from. I love Grapes of Wrath for its immensity, Of Mice and Men for its simplicity, Travels With Charley for its humanity, but I have to admit to a very soft spot for both Cannery Row and Tortilla Flat, simply because I am stunned and amazed at the genius of any ... ... fireworks here on the 4th.
