Exploring the concept of immortality has never been sweeter. Babbitt shares how the 'fountain of youth' idea is not all one would hope for.

The story is enchanting and dream-like. I fell in love with the characters, and felt I was right there with each one. You know a good author when they have the ability to capture your heart. This is a story for all ages, 1 to infinity. ( )

This book would be good to use in literature circles to help children more deeply explore it.

The Tuck family are unique in that they never age. They drank from the eternal spring and will live forever at the same age. A ten year old name Winnie Foster stumbles upon this family and is taught that living forever might not be as good as it sounds. This book is an excellent book to introduce critical thinking to young children. It touches on some very thought provoking topics and would be a great book to have many class discussion about.

The descriptions and word-pictures in this children's chapter book were beautiful and fresh, giving new life to a little town in the 1800's. Because this book was written to children, the main character is a typical child - wanting adventure, but scared to take it; unhappy with the rules set in her life; naive and innocent in the ways this world works. The other characters, too, have a sort of childish nature, whether it be from the viewpoint they are seen - Winnie's viewpoint - or simply from being written for the audience this book was intended for.

First words
The first week of August hangs at the very top of the summer, the top of the live-long year, like the highest seat of a Ferris wheel when it pauses in its turning.
Quotations
Winnie woke early the next morning. The sun was only just opening its own eye on the eastern horizon and the cottage was full of silence. But she realized that sometime during the night her had made up her mind: she would not runaway today. 'Where would I go anyway?'....But in another part of her head...she knew there was another sort of reason for staying at home: she was afraid of going away alone.

Amazon.com Amazon.com Review (ISBN 0312369816, Paperback)

Imagine coming upon a fountain of youth in a forest. To live forever--isn't that everyone's ideal? For the Tuck family, eternal life is a reality, but their reaction to their fate is surprising. Award winner Natalie Babbitt (Knee-Knock Rise, The Search for Delicious) outdoes herself in this sensitive, moving adventure in which 10-year-old Winnie Foster is kidnapped, finds herself helping a murderer out of jail, and is eventually offered the ultimate gift--but doesn't know whether to accept it. Babbitt asks profound questions about the meaning of life and death, and leaves the reader with a greater appreciation for the perfect cycle of nature. Intense and powerful, exciting and poignant, Tuck Everlasting will last forever--in the reader's imagination. An ALA Notable Book. (Ages 9 to 12) --Emilie Coulter
