A better book on the same period is A Stillness Heard Round the World, by Stanley Weintraub. Also see A Storm in Ypres, by Winston Groom and Joseph Persico's book, Eleventh Hour, Eleventh Day, Eleventh Month. This book by Best is drawn from accounts in memoirs and biographies, with not much analysis. He lets the reader do his or her own analysis, which is OK. A follow-up, telling what became of the people referred to repeatedly during the six days would have been enlightening. Great subject matter, but not well handled, in my view. ( )Would we all care as much about the First World War if it hadn't ended on 11/11 at 11:11? no reviews | add a review
