I love Golden Guides for the very reason that they are so accessible for children. Admittedly, a lot of the more scientific names will prompt many children to run to the nearest adult for pronunciation, however scientific books geared toward children are always a win.

It's been my experience that the gorier a book is, the more a child relishes it. Venomous Animals is no exception- from fish that cause excruciating pain with one sting, to spiders that build nests, to flying insects that bite, children seemed to lap this book up like spilled sugar.

The illustrations that accompanied the scientific jargon were well done and will help kids to more easily identify these dangerous critters in their local zoos and aquariums, as well as in the wild, where they pose a more significant threat.

Perhaps the best selling feature of this book is that it prompts a child to look for more information from other sources. Venomous Animals gave just enough to titillate young readers, prompting them to race for Wikipedia or the library to find more information on some of their favorites from the book.

All in all, four stars out of five. A book is always a win if it teaches a child something useful while encouraging them to look in other sources for more information. ( )
