This fast paced novel describes the trials and tribulations of a mobster who goes doctor after a trip through the witness protection program. A fantastic, fun read. (Review) I just finished Trainspotting which was an enjoyable and challenging read.

I'm not sure which disgustingly gruesome part we aren't supposed to discuss, since I thought there were so many! Even more gruesome than Martin Cruz Smith's books. I'm looking ... I just finished Beat the Reaper too. It was a bit rough and strangely constructed (medical info and footnotes in a crime novel?) but in spite of all the quirks I did enjoy reading it. I am hoping that is not a comment on me. Will be interested in hearing what you all have to say.

Others have said the same. Thus, I'm staying away from Beat the Reaper I finished Beat the Reaper yesterday and I do not recommend it. For me it was too violent, gory, and gratuitous. I think the author was trying to be funny and maybe there are some readers who would enjoy this book but I don't think I know any one who would.
But I'll try to hold my opinion in ... I finished Beat the Reaper yesterday. And I recommend it only to people who have a tendency towards a weird or perverse sense of humor; too much blood, death, dying, ugly urban reality junk woven between medical information and typical mafia stereotypes. I just finished reading Beat the Reaper and I think perhaps the book should come with a warning (credit to CarolO for this idea) that it contains quite a bit of violence and potentially stomach turning descriptions. I have both Beat the Reaper (library book) and Faceless Killers (I own it) here, so one of these days I may actually get them read. I hope I enjoy them as much as you did.
Edited to try ... ... the character's choices in this book, which is why I think I didn't enjoy it as much as I have other books in its genre.

Right now I'm in the middle of the most dumbed-down piece of trash I've read in months, a crime/thriller called Beat the Reaper by first-time novelist Josh Bazell that I'm almost embarrassed to admit to reading. Its premise is preposterous (Mafia hit-man becomes a doctor, yeah right) ... ... mmendations.
For me, Archimedes to Hawking: Laws of Science and the Great Minds Behind Them by Clifford A. Pickover and Beat the Reaper by Josh Bazell rated the most likely that I would like them so I guess I will throw my votes in for these two.

I don't know if this is the January book lovemybooks is talking about, but I've got Beat the Reaper which says on the back that it's not coming out until January, 2009. Which is good for prioritizing because I can now push it to the bottom of my review pile without feeling massive ... ... up hope...i think i said that i believe my mailman may be reading these books and resealing them...lol
today i received Beat The Reaper by Josh Bazell from the UPS person.
it seems he/she is not a reader like the mail carrier... 72. Beat the reaper by Josh Bazell. Hmmh...what did I think of this book? Well I got it as an ARC and I am happy that I did not spend my money on it. It was entertaining but I could have done without the vulgarity and bad language especially at the beginning. The basic story is that of Peter Brow ... Received Beat the Reaper yesterday, it was dropped at the door. Still waiting on others from SA, starting to wonder about mail-lady as well. Also, got my LT Arc Summer Blowout. Today I got Guernica and Beat the Reaper, one in the mail & one at my door. A good book day:) Received Beat the Reaper in IN. Got Beat the Reaper by Josh Bazell via UPS today. Another incredibly ugly cover. It's not the cover shown on LT (which is perhaps not quite as hideous, but still unappealing). The plot sounds intriguing, but based on cover art, I'd never pick this up. So Long at the Fair AND Beat the Reaper today in NJ.
