Chick Bowdrie could have ridden the outlaw trail, but the Texas Rangers recruited him because they didn't want to have to fight against him. Pursuing the most wanted men in the Southwest, Bowdrie has sworn to carry out the law--but there are times when he has to apply justice with his fists and guns.

As said in reviewing Hills of Homicide, I actually like L'Amour better as a writer of mysteries than a writer of westerns, and I like the Bowdrie stories because they combine those genres. I also prefer mystery short stories to novels, so that is another point in their favor. L'Amour does rather buy into the favorable myth of the Texas Rangers, whom some modern historians see as more racist (especially anti-Mexican) etc. But for fiction this is more pleasant than the reality might have been. Short stories that all star Chick Bowdrie - a mysterious man who wanders the west for the Texas Rangers, in pursuit of justice. A strong character astride a cross-grained hammerheaded roan. Tightly written, entertaining. ( )

Foreword: Following the Civil War, conditions in Texas were chaotic.
Only a moment before, Chick Bowdrie had been dozing in the saddle, weary from the long miles behind; then a sudden tensing of muscles of the hammerheaded roan brought him out of it.

Book description
It was a name that caused the most hardened gunmen to break out in a cold sweat. Chick Bowdrie. He could have ridden the outlaw trail, but the Texas Rangers recruited him because they didn't want to have to fight against him. Pursuing the most wanted men in the Southwest, he knew all too well the dusty trails, the bitter cattle feuds, the desperate killers and the quiet, weather-beaten, wind-blasted towns that could explode into actions with the wrong word. He had sworn to carry out the law, but there were times when he had to apply justice with his fists and his guns. They called in the Rangers to handle the tough ones and there was never a Ranger tougher or smarter than Bowdrie.
