Satirisch-filosofische parabel over een maatschappij waarin een autoritaire macht een spiegel- en afbeeldingsverbod uitvaardigt. Alle spiegels en fototoestellen worden in een autodafé vernietigd, met het doel om de ijdelheid, laatste teken van individuatie, af te schaffen. Geschreven in Wenen omstreeks 1933-'34, bloeijaren van het NS. Ook in Oostenrijk heerste toen een niet-democratisch regime.
