I have always been interested in Zoology, and as a kid, I used to beg my parents to take me to our small local zoo, even if we had just gone yesterday. When my family lived in Washington D.C., we went to the excellent, very large zoo there, where I was fascinated. My family went there two more times after that, both times mainly due to my insistence, and once driving 4 hours to get there.
So, in this book, I saw a chance to revisit a childhood passion.

It gives a history of wildlife dating back to the middle ages, and times when species starting becoming more frequently endangered, as well as histories of the first zoos and efforts to preserve them.
From there, it takes us to various zoos around the world, briefly highlighting their best contributions to preserving wildlife. There are some stories as well, such as chasing an escaped tapir through the neighborhood (an excerpt from The Whispering Land by Gerald Durrell, which I coincidentally just read).

I was very disappointed that the book didn't go into any detail about how zoos work, though. As a kid, I would walk around exhibits furiously scribbling in my notebook, flagging down zookeepers and employees to ask what the zoo diet for a red panda was, or how many resident species were released back into the wild, or how elephants were transported to the zoo.
Nothing like that here. ( )

This particular volume has a chapter on the Durrell zoo on Jersey, with some very nice photographs of Gerald Durrell.
