I'm a sucker for stories where girls dress up like boys to do things they can't do otherwise, so I thought a book about a girl who pretends to be a boy in order to become a knight sounded interesting. The language was a little simplistic for my ... xicanti,
I'm glad you finally found a Pierce book you liked! I agree that there was much in Alanna that could have been fleshed out. The Lightning Thief is good too though, I am really enjoying that series as well. I voted for The Lightning Thief, Alanna, and Magic Lessons. I voted for The Lighting Thief, Alanna, and My Sister's Keeper. #571 -- Oh, I liked East!
I just finished a reread of Alanna: the first adventure, which wins prizes for the most lackluster title, as well as the most truly hideous cover art, but is still a fun read. Not sure yet what I'll read next -- I've started Little Lord Fauntleroy, which I'm ... It's that time of the month again...your suggestions are needed.
Alanna: The First Adventure was in 2nd place last month so it automatically gets to be on the list.
Also, there were some suggestions after the polls closed for March about reading 13 Little Blue Envelopes along with Hank on ... If I had to name just one book it would definitely be Alanna or maybe the Woman who rides like a Man.
No, wait, it would be Ender's Game. And Ender's shadow is quite good, too.
No, um, the Lion, the witch and the wardrobe. But I also love Voyage of the Dawn Treader.
No, no, I ... I seriously adore Tamora Pierce and the Song of the Lioness series (the first book is Alanna: The First Adventure). I still read it, and secretly covet the Library Binding editions. :D The Winner is Snow Flower and Secret Fan with Alanna in 2nd. ... one book for adults before she cut it into 4 for ya
That's interesting. I've never heard that before. I read Alanna when I was a kid and I don't remember book 4 coming out for a long time later. Tamora Pierce definatly. Title: Alanna: The First Adventure
Author: Tamora Pierce
Notes: Terrific book. Very enjoyable. I'm looking forward to reading the next three books in the series. The story is nicely written and the characters are fun to read. The ending was an especially nice touch. Alanna: The First Adventure and rest of that series have always been some of my favourites. I love the Chronicles of Chrestomanci too. ...
The Little Prince by Antoine de Saint-Exupery
Belinda by Anne Rice
The Marketplace by Laura Antoniou
Alanna by Tamora Pierce ... the punch. I'll say it again anyway: Tamora Pierce is definitely a feminist writer. The first book of hers that I read, Alanna, is about a girl who challenges the societal norm that boys become knights and girls learn magic by dressing up as a boy and becoming a knight. I loved it as a child, ... ... wry
The Marketplace by Laura Antoniou
The Sleeping Beauty trilogy by Anne Rice (writing as A.N. Roquelaure)
The Alanna quartet by Tamora Pierce
and my absolute favorite, which I own in English, Filipino, French, German, and Latin:
The Little Prince by Antoine de Saint-E ... Twilight, Alanna, Rules of Survival, mainly because I have not read them. The Time Traveler's Wife was beyond terrific and would initiate a lively discussion. I voted for My Sister's Keeper, The Golden Compass, and Alanna:. Twilight was close to getting a vote from me but I feel there are already discussions of it going on and there were lots of good books to vote for this month!
Also, I was wondering, even though it obviously doesn't matter to ... I voted for Alanna, Twilight, and The Time Traveler's Wife. I would love to discuss any of those! I wanted to vote for My Sister's Keeper too, but that would have made four! I voted for the two I own: The Golden Compass and Alanna: the First Adventure. ... so many good things about it and it seems appropriate to read about vampires in October
It was a hard decision, though--Alanna: the first adventure is one of my favourite books ever. ... it again when it is in paperback.
I think we have enough suggestions, so here is the final list to vote on...
Alanna by Tamora Pierce
Twilight by Stephenie Meyer
The Time-Traveler's Wife by Audrey Niffenegger
My Sister's Keeper by Jodi Picoult
Invisible by ... Oh and also? I have the hots for George in Tamora Pierce's Alanna books. BAD. Some parts of the books made me feel entirely too tingly. ... My Sister's Keeper, especially since I've been meaning to read it anyway.
If we're not doing fantasy that discounts Alanna for the month, and on second thought Winter's Tale might be too long. I think The Time Traveler's Wife should be an interesting pick, though. I haven't read it, ... ... I agree that anything by Tamora Pierce is great (even if we don't do it for a discussion, I highly recommend everyone read Alanna: The First Adventure)! I can't think of any unique recommendations at the moment though... Alanna: the first adventure is YA, but fantasy again.
For non-fantasy, maybe we could do My Sister's Keeper? It's not YA, but won the Alex Award. Edited to make a stronger case for it: and it seems like the sort that would make for an interesting discussion, though I haven't read it. ... Alex Award given to Adult books that are appropriate and appealing to YAs.
I am not familiar with Tamora Pierce or Alanna: the first adventure. As for The Time-travelers Wife and Winter's Tale, convince us to why you think it would appeal to YAs and be discussed in a YA Lit group. ... How about something by Tamora Pierce? Say, Alanna: the first adventure?
Or Mark Helprin's Winter's Tale? I'm not sure if that one is YA fiction, though.
Or An Abundance of Katherines by John Green? ... should write fewer books about girls. And like Kira, the girl-disguised-as-a-boy plot device is one of my favourites (Alanna: The First Adventure is another good example of that). ... (304)
91. *His Majesty's Dragon by Naomi Novik (353)
92. *The Throne of Jade by Naomi Novik (398)
93. Alanna: The First Adventure by Tamora Pierce (231)

On the Road - Jack Kerouac
Cars & Trucks & Things that Go - Richard Scarry
The Hijack Adventure -Chistopher Wright
Up the River - Samantha Ruskin ... I don't think I would recommend just Trickster's Choice and Trickster's Queen, you really need to start way back at the Alanna series to make sense of everything in the Trickster books. Alanna: the First Adventure and the rest of that series by Tamora Pierce, definitely. Before that I was quite wary of fantasy (I was very much a western/historical fiction sort of kid), but when somebody gave me those as a present, I fell absolutely in love. ...

I really enjoy Tamora Pierce's fantasy. The Alanna series is my favorite, but there are a number who disagree.
You also might want to try Ella Enchanted as a fairy tale retelling. ... from the outsiders

literary crushes are the best...thanks for letting me reminisce... ... which are the oldest covers. This is my cover of Alanna. The ones like this are the ones I hate most - pastel, frilly, and poofy. The biggest "threat" to my TBR list is Tamora Pierce. I had Alanna on my list, so of course I had to read the next three. And those led me to Wild Magic and then the next in that series. So that's eight books right there! ... characters a bit one dimensional. Zainal and Kris were far too uncaring about Kris having another man's child.
#20 Alanna by Tamora Pierce
I read this once before and didn't remember most of it. Simple but entertaining.
#21 By the Shores of Silver Lake by Laura Ingalls Wilder
... ... it. If something else catches my interest, I'll read it. For example, I got tired of reading heady stuff, so I grabbed Alanna by Tamora Pierce. A light bit of fluff was what I needed right then.
But when the "what should I read next" question comes up, I go to my list. When I finish with ... ... when the talk turned to 'light' books. I realize that they are supposedly 'young adult' books but so is Harry Potter. While Alanna is the first of her first series (did that make sense?), her Circle of Magic series and Trickster's Choice are also just as great and compelling! I can't think of a favorite title, but I will say that Alanna: The First Adventure is one of the stupidest titles I've ever seen. That said, I'm still a fan of Tamora Pierce and I think that was the first book of hers I read, so I guess it didn't matter that much anyway. ... book - yes, I'm a numbers nerd and keep certain statistics for every book I finish).

Alanna: The First Adventure (Lionness Quartet) by Tamora Pierce ... buy a book purely because of its cover.
Er. Well, that's not entirely true. I refrained from purchasing a new copy of Alanna by Tamora Pierce for years because I despise the new covers (they're so...frilly and...pastel!) and I wanted the same cover I had from the copy my high school ... Oh! Oh!
I love Tamora Pierce, I was very excited to see her new book!!
I hope you enjoy it! Alanna: The First Adventure is the actual first book. There are also three other books about Alanna, and then two more quartets, and THEN the Trickster books. So it would definitely be hard to start with the Trickster ones. ... there were other books ahead of it in a series. I am going to try the Alanna books and then Trickster's Choice again. Is Alanna the first Adventure the actual first book? ... but for a quick, fun read.
If you're into fantasy, anything by Tamora Pierce, especially the Alanna series (Alanna: The First Adventure starts it out).
Ann Rinaldi writes really good historical fiction, especially Girl in Blue.
Chasing Redbird by Sharon Creech ... This is haaaard!!
When I was a kid I must have checked out Alanna: The First Adventure by Tamora Pierce about a million times from my library. They probably should have just given me the book since it spent so much time at my house. I love the strong, intellegent, gutsy female characters ... My personal favorite is the first edition hardback of Alanna: the First Adventure - Not only have I always loved the artwork, it evokes all kinds of memories about when I purchased the book and an important time in my relationship with books. Tons of sentimental attachement to it.
Last week I ... ... HP books, Ender's Game, Speaker for the Dead, Sunshine (I love Robin McKinley's books and this was no exception), Alanna: The First Adventure, Dealing with Dragons, and Street Magic; I envy your Bujold and Wrede collections, in particular, and I've read a few more of the ... ... than the first three in the series. Also, I'm almost done listening to Cloud Atlas by David Mitchell - I've got Alanna, the First Adventure by Tamora Pierce queued up next. ... it's definitely best to start with The Song of the Lioness books, fyrefly.
And even though I was ten when I first read Alanna: The First Adventure, I'm twenty-one now, and I reread it and the rest of the quartet fairly often. They definitely are ageless and stand the test of time. I have to disagree with you, wyvernfriend. Alanna: The First Adventure is quite possibly my favorite Tamora Pierce book of all time, in close contention with In the Hand of the Goddess. Like _Zoe_, I don't even like the Daine books as much as the Lioness books. This might be because I ... Alanna and Daine are two characters in Tamora Pierce's hugely successful series. Starts with Alanna, the first adventure and gets better from there ... - Her Tortall books. There are three quartets and one set of two, all featuring strong female heriones. I'd start with the Alanna books. Her Circle of Magic books are also decent, but more geared towards younger readers.
Robin McKinley - The Hero and the Crown and The Blue Sword. These ...
