Again, he's mixed Fantasy with SF into a very interesting tapestry that's a quick, fun & interesting read. He's put a somewhat unique spin on well worn subjects & brought them into conflict & out again.Madwand is the second book & I almost wish I hadn't read it. Not that it wasn't as good as this one, but I could easily live with this book as a stand alone book. Madwand ends on a cliff hanger that will never be resolved because the master has left us. Some others have tried to finish his works & except for Betancourt's prequel to Amber series, I don't think they've done a very good job. Even Betancourt's works haven't been universally approved, although I like them. Worst of all, his series will likely never be finished. The fifth & final book of the series was written & the publisher folded before releasing it. The new publisher has no interest in publishing it. SHAME!!! (Oberon is left in a tight fix at the end of book 4 - how does he get out of it?!!!) ( )Though it does involve magic this book has nothing to do with elves or other fairy creatures. The title is derived from the fact that two of the main characters had been switched at birth. Although I am a big fan of the sketchy sorts of pen drawings found in certain editions of this book (and it's sequal "Madwand") the actual story it's self has little to recommend it. IMHO the "Amber" books are a much better representation of Zelazny's work. - Peter K. Quite enjoyed this author. Another one to read more of. Interesting mix of hard sci-fi and fantasy. A good wizard, a bad wizard, and a child, and a castle of power to be inherited. A climactic battle involving the former pair leads to the child being taken to Earth to survive. He grows up there, and eventually comes back and ends up battling for his heritage. The son, Pol, approaches this from a technological background, so there is a clash of magic and technology. http://notfreesf.blogspot.com/2006/11... no reviews | add a review
