A modern tank Iike a modern aircraft is an extremely complex and costly item of specialised and advanced technology. It is no longer enough -if indeed it ever was -just to have tanks in numbers. Part of the price of maintaining an effective deterrent to Soviet aggression in Europe is to ensure that the Western Alliance has tanks that are not only capable of defeating in battle the best the Russians can hurl against them but can clearly be seen to be able to do it w ith a margin of technical superiority that will overcome the enemy's advantage both in .greater numbers and in striking first. This calls for tank design and equipment of exceedingly high order. Only three NATO nations have the technological capacity for the task -the Americans, the Germans and the British. This book relates how the problem has been tackled in different ways by the three major Allies and gives full details, including colour illustrations, of the major AFVs now in service and contemplated.
Written by Noel Ayliffe·Jones, a foremost authority on armoured fighting vehicles, it is illustrated with superb colour and black-andwhite photographs, many of which are the recent work of the distinguished military photographer, Robin Adshead . ( )
