A thorough ecological study of the Mascarene islands: Mauritius, Réunion, and Rodrigues. Cheke and Hume explore the islands century-by-century, discussing the various animal and plant species and the overall ecology of the islands and how human activities, species introductions, and other actions changed the natural balance of the island ecosystems.

Largely a technical study, but with some whimsical moments here and there, as well as a number of very amusing illustrations. More in-depth than the casual reader probably needs or wants, but I found it quite fascinating. ( )
