The Bartimaeus Trilogy starting with The Amulet of Samarkand by Jonathan Stroud is an excellent YA series, I would say targeted for mid to late teens but great none-the-less.

So I keep a database of all the books I've read since high school, and evidently I read this book when it first came out. *I ... ... you on Jonathan Strange and Mr Norrell, but one I like even more is Jonathan Stroud's "Bartimaeus" trilogy (starting with The Amulet of Samarkand), which has the same use of footnoting that Susanna Clarke uses, though I think with a more humorous touch. ... are my recomendations feel free to add to the recomendation list!

On that basis, you might want to try Jonathan Stroud's Bartimaeus trilogy, starting with The Amulet of Samarkand followed by The Golem's Eye and then Ptolemy's Gate. It seems to be available also as The Bartimaeus Trilogy Boxed Set. The Amulet of Samarkand by Jonathan Stroud ... having lives and motives that are alien to humans (see Jonathan Strange and Mr. Norrell for a great example, and the Amulet of Samarkand Bartimaeus trilogy for the equivalent with djinn), but vampires have been reduced to something decidedly more mundane.

Series that I'd recommend are the Artemis Fowl books by Eoin Colfer, Jonathan Stroud's Bartimaeus Trilogy, Philip Reeve's Hungry City Chronicles or Darren Shan's Cirque du Freak vampire series, also Emily Rodda's Deltora Quest series. The only books I have with samarkand in the title are the amulet of samarkand and the magician of samarkand and I'm almost definitely sure it's neither of them. One lonely book, but a good YA: The Amulet of Samarkand, first book of the Bartimaeus Trilogy.
PS, mckait ~ I read Annie Freeman's last year. It was okay, but seemed to be written more for older women. I passed mine on to a friend who's in her 40s and she liked it better than I, ... ... shopping mall I working in.

If you don't mind a bit of the "real" world thrown in, Jonathan Stroud's The Amulet of Samarkand is a good fun read and the first of a trilogy.

I finished The Amulet of Samarkand which was very good. It's a YA book but a great adventure and really funny, particularly the footnotes. Bartimaeus is a fantastic character. This will appeal to Terry Pratchett fans and Harry Potter fans I think (and ... For Fantasy I would say Artemis Fowl, Fablehaven, the amulet of Samarkand, Sisters Grimm and Into the Land of Unicorns. There is also Maximum Ride witch is si-fi.
Also Science Fair and Carpe Diem. Science Fair is a bit of a si-fi and really funny! Carpe Diem is about a sixteen ... My two cents worth:
Jonathan Stroud's Bartimaeus Triliogy (The Amulet of Samarkand, The Golem's Eye and Ptolemy's Gate)
and
Christopher Rowley's Bazil Broketail series (I think there are 7 or 8 books)
and
Robert A. Heinlein's Starship Troopers ... you need a particular sense of humour for it I think). Not a bad read at all.
Which leaves me with Titus Groan and The Amulet of Samarkand on the go, as well as The Stuff of Thought which I haven't picked up for ages now... I'm still reading Titus Groan, and also The Amulet of Samarkand. Really enjoying both of them. I'm reading The Amulet of Samarkand which I'm enjoying so far, I also had a bit of a splurge on YA books over the weekend so over the next few weeks will hopefully be reading Coraline (in time for the film release), The Dragonfly Pool, The Tales of Beedle the Bard and Howl's Moving Castle. ... ... by Sheri S. When I showed my friend The Amulet of Samarkand with the cover where the amulet is on a city background, she was interested. However when I showed her the paperback version she looked confused, ... Bib, I wasn't a big fan of the Amulet of Samarkand either for pretty much the same reason... Also the second book was a bit painful for me. And I never made it to the third book. I am going to try again last year but I'm not sure if I will make it through the next time either.

I agree with The Amulet of Samarkand , Artemis Fowl, the Alex Rider series and Ender's Game. Maximum Ride is awesome! Finished The Battle of the Labyrinth last night and got started on The Amulet of Samarkand. Stroud's writing is better than Riordan's though he seems to be one of those writers who thinks you can't be taken seriously unless you have a simile on every page. The Amulet of Samarkand is one that I use in my YAL class! The kids love the sarcasm of Bartemeaus. The Amulet of Samarkand is a really good book. I also highly suggest Stormbreaker or any of the other books in that series, though they are not fantasy. Here are some others:

Maximum Ride though it is more science fiction and I am not sure it counts as fantasy

I haven't read The Amulet of Samarkand but i have read Lord of the Flies. I have never read Dragonflight but I have read The Amulet of Samarkand 10. Das Amulett von Samarkand by Jonathan Stroud. I didn't actually read this, but listened to the audio book /been driving a lot lately). It is spoken by a german actor (Martin Semmelrogge) who strikes exactly the right notes for the impudent demon and his swollen-headed master. I like the ... L ... I'm curretly plodding through The Golem's Eye, which I'm having a much harder time getting into than I had with The Amulet of Samarkand. I'm also starting school and will be reading at least parts of Women's Lives: multicultural perspectives and the norton anthology of literature by women ... I have just bought Wicked Lovely by Melissa Marr. I also have the amulet of samarkand on my tbr pile, along with the other 3 in that series.
How about Kelley Armstrong new series the summoning (darkest powers) I think that is paperback. I'm throwing in two more possibilities: The Amulet of Samarkand and Dairy Queen. All of the suggestions look great so far! ... of my teachers loaned it to me an it was a wonderful book. It looked like it was long, but it didn't take long to read.

The Amulet of Samarkand is the closest I can think of but I really doubt that's it. I'm reading The Golem's Eye by Jonathan Stroud and so far I'm liking it even more than The Amulet of Samarkand. After a moments pondering, I have to say The Amulet of Samarkand by Jonathan Stroud.But I don't limit myself to just one favorite. I'm definitely looking forward to seeing the Amulet of Samarkand turned into a movie. I've heard that Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell is being turned into a movie. I haven't read it yet, but from what I know about it, and seeing the masterpeice Jackson made of the LoTR trilogy, I think he could ... ... ones I have heard about include:

While Hollywood can often take a good book and turn it into a horrible movie (i.e. Eragon, the Founta ... I tend to buy them one at a time, which explains why, for example, I have the Amulet of Samarkand in hardback in one edition, and the Golem's Eye, and Ptolemy's Gate in paperback in a different edition. I'm also 14, my favorite books include: The Amulet os Samarkand, and The Golem's Eye by Jonathan Stroud, The Wee Free Men and The Bromeliad Trilogy by Terry Pratchett, The Hollow Kingdom by Clare B. Dunkle, Companions of the Night by Vivian Vande Velde, The Silver Chair ... I can't believe I forgot The Dark is Rising! Loved it, should probably read the rest of the series.

Hey everyone thanks for all the feedback. Right now I think I am leaning towards either The Amulet of Samarkand or Stardust as they seem to be the lighter of the options. Then I will work my way to the others.

The Amulet of Samarkand and the rest of the Bartimaeus Trilogy use this concept too, the characters within the story never reveal their true(Birth) names, as this would give enemies power over them, so they are given a title instead. I don't have a great deal of information on the ... ... authors you've mentioned. Have you read William Nicholson's Wind Singer, or Michelle Paver's Wolf Brother? The Amulet of Samarkand by Johnathon Stroud is also good. Too many books, too little time!
