Not as good as “Un Homme pour le Roi” (volume 1), and even less than my favorite “La Messe Rouge” (volume 2), this third installment is still very good. You will be able to figure some things out easily, and towards the very end the story gets a bit predictable and it seems there was a rush to finish the book, but it is still quite well written. Belzoni’s characters are really captivating, but G. Lenotre describes the charming Baron de Batz otherwise in his book Un Conspirateur Royaliste Pendent la Terreur: “Il passait pour un aventurier brutal, sans scrupule, toujours pressé d’argent, dur pour les paysans qui, en revance, l’appelait Le Voleur.” Nevertheless, it is easy to belive Benzoni’s Batz—charming, loving, sensitive, but determined to reinstate the king, coute qui coute! (Despite what Benzoni describes in the book, Batz married in 1808.) But you won't see much of him and Louis XVII vanishes from the story. If you are looking for a happy-ending , this is not the book for you. But a great read nevertheless, and to boot with lots of (real) facts about the French “revolution” we never hear. ( )
