Giscombe's first book, _Giscome Road_, is one of my favorite volumes of contemporary poetry, and _Prairie Style_ is a strong follow-up, though quite different formally. Rather than the sprawling, cartographic, open-field verse of _Giscombe Road_, this collection works in short, dense, prose poems. The poems inhabit the aphoristic and the epigrammatic, as well as the colloquial and comedic modes. Giscombe captures a sense of place as well as any other contemporary poet I can think of, and isn't afraid to risk sentiment, as in the end to the poem "Canadian Nights": "As you know, I'm still a nature boy. Looking back I wanted--I want--to equal the whole prairie." ( )

Giscombe's prose poetic line in PS is spare yet sinuously jazzy, flat yet monumental, befitting a mid-American landscape in which the plane surface is the template and the high place but a mirage. See my review of Prairie Style in the Summer 2009 on-line edition of Rain Taxi at http://www.raintaxi.com/online/2009summer/giscombe.shtml. ( )
