A very well written book based on insurgency in Assam, and how it affects the lives of the three main characters. The detailed descriptions of the Assam countryside are vividly constructed. The author is not judgemental, but write sympathetically about infidelity, illegal migration into the state, and the resultant insurgency. She creates an atmosphere of fear and looming danger through her descriptions of the monsoons rains and pre-monsoon thunder storms, the jungles, the river , and the craggy hills surrounding the town where the protagonist lives, but at the same time the tale is told lightly. There are no good or bad people in this novel. All the characters are sketched with affection and they all behave in a mild and civilised manner, perhaps reflecting the genteelity of the Assamese people. ( )
