Margiad Evans' short stories are considered the best of her work. Ceridwen Lloyd-Morgan explains in the introduction, which contextualises these short stories in terms of her life and work, that she worked longer on her short stories than on her novels. It shows, in these tight and lyrical stories -- though personally, I think I prefer the novels.

I've mentioned this before, as two of the stories here were included in another anthology, but Margiad Evans actually wrote a short story, 'A Modest Adornment', about a lesbian couple. It's not the most positive and uplifting of stories, but it's interesting that lesbians were not invisible as far as she was concerned.

This Seren edition contains notes and explanations of where the stories came from as well. ( )
