... haven't already read that, I would recommend this book above all her others .... oh wait... hmmm....I'll put it on par with Chocolat.

#12: I really liked Harris' book Chocolat, so I am going to give Holy Fools a try. Thanks for the review and recommendation!

Ooooh, Shannon Hale! Ikeep meaning to pick up more of her works, Mary! And Chocolat is on my TBR pile! I'm determined to start getting said pile down to reasonable levels!

I knew that Chocolat was part of the food trilogy (Blackberry Wine and Five Quarters of the Orange) but a direct sequel! - I have to stop reading these threads:)

I bought 6 books new, which is a luxury in the Year of Book-Abstinence: Holy Fools by Joanne Harris - I've just read Chocolat (which I noticed Calm bought) and it was so beautiful, so much better than the movie, that I can see another author addiction in the makings. Digging to America ...

#79 jennieg The synopsis/ sales pitch for that is in the back of Chocolat, it does look interesting. I'll keep my eyes open. (Strict rule at the moment — no brand new books!)

Perhaps some Joanne Harris, like Chocolat?

Adding Five Quarters of an Orange to Planet TBR, especially since I really enjoyed her Chocolat.

teelgee in Girlybooks : ORANGE JULY 2009 (Jul 6, 2009, 2:24am)

The first Joanne Harris I read was Coastliners - a delightful novel. And at the time I didn't know she'd written Chocolat which was such an awesome movie and the book was wonderful. Five Quarters of the Orange was too. I have a couple more of hers on the shelf, waiting.

I re-watched the film of Chocolat the other day, so now I'm re-reading its sequel The Lollipop Shoes. While I'm enjoying it, I think that the author didn't really need to write a sequel to Chocolat, which was such a wonderful, self-contained fable. Anyway, I should be reading Girl in a Bl ...

... and Players by Joanne Harris (recommended to me by Ron) was a very good character mystery. And if you haven't read Chocolat by Joanne Harris, that one is one of my favorites too!

... she didn't. Not much magical realism in this one. She mentions 'the wind' bringing a change a few times which reminded of Chocolat and The Girl With No Shadow where she used the same phrasing. In fact I was reminded of Girl a few times, I think it was the whole 'assumed identity' ...

I really liked Chocolat (even though I do not like chocolate, lol), but I may give Pomegranate Soup in spite of the poor comparison. We will see if I can find a copy any time soon - I am not going to just rush right out to find one because of your reservations.

BOOK 54 The Girl With No Shadow by Joanne Harris 444 Pages The Girl With No Shadow is the sequel to Joanne Harris' Chocolat. It's been four years and Vianne, Anouk, and little Rosette run a chocolaterie in Paris. Only Vianne has decided to deny her magic and is trying to live a normal, ...

Hi pamelad, I absolutely adored Coastliners! Since I've read Chocolat and The girl with the lollipop shoes (I believe that that's the titel in English, don't know for sure, in Dutch it is called "red shoes") I became a huge fan of Joanne Harris. I love her books, because of her style (a ...

Of course, you aren't crazy at all. In fact books like Chocolat and Under the Tuscan Sun are twice as enjoyable to read when munching on foods like the ones they describe in delicious detail. ;o) We have a thread from way back about eating and reading. Let me see if I can dredge it up.

... (and I felt like the organization of the book wasn't great, either -- the last story was a real downer). Now I'm reading Chocolat. I like it so far, but tonight I went to the grocery store and bought serious amounts of chocolate. I will not be held responsible for my actions!

I just finished Chocolat, which I really liked! It is different from the movie, but since I haven't seen the movie in so long, I only remembered the bits of the movie that were in the book. I finished the mystery When No One was Looking (which was really good!), and I'll probably start Chocolat soon, since it will probably need to be returned to the library soon.

I just finished Chocolat. It is beautifully written. There are many differences from the movie, but I understand why they made the changes. The movie also makes it more of a love story while the book is more about belonging and hypocrisy. My son is pushing The Demigod Files on me, so I'll ...

Well, I am giving up on The Girl with No Shadow. I read Chocolat last year and really enjoyed it, but I am at the 50-page point in Girl and it just is not doing anything for me. It does not have the magical quality to it that I so enjoyed in Chocolat. I will have another go at it some time ...

I finished Hotel du Lac last night (was quite disappointed in it) and immediately started Chocolat by Joanne Harris. I loved the movie; I'm already seeing that the book is much more complex. I love Harris' writing.

... Harris. It was very good, but it didn't have the same spark that some of her other books have had, so as a sequel to Chocolat it was a bit of a disappointment. Now I plan on reading Ireland: A Novel by Frank Delaney which I was given for Christmas. No idea what to expect but my ...

I am currently reading Chocolat by Joanne Harris. I should read the two books about Princess Diana I bought two months though. Never had a to-be-read pile of books. Never, I swear! Seriously, I can't explain that suddenly 10 books are waiting to be read.

A bonanza in the mail today: Chocolat, requested from a fellow LT member's Paperbackswap bookshelf! The True History of the Kelly Gang, also from PBS The Reluctant Fundamentalist, directly from another LT member. I love LT and PBS! Woo hoo!

    49) Chocolat by Joanne Harris (review)

I am nearly finished with Chocolat by Joanne Harris, which I am enjoying immensely. Very different from the movie but all in good ways. After that, I will start The Red Tent by Anita Diamant.

I am about halfway through Blackberry Wine by Joanne Harris. I remembered enjoying Chocolat - the only other book of hers I've read - but I also vaguely remember being disenchanted by something small and fleetingly pesky about her writing style. #9 - I have, miss_read! I liked it. It's not as good as Chocolat, but it is fun. If you read it it right after Chocolat, it will probably seem even less worthy, however.

We did Chocolat a year or so ago, but now someone has put forward Blackberry Wine for next month. I've heard that it's awful. Has anyone read it?

We just discussed The Glass Castle--a great book for discussion. Next up is Chocolat!
