The Bigg family decides to go on a picnic to Black Rock, but once they get there, they run into a few problems; Mom Bigg forgets most of the food in the basket, and Big Bad Brad tells the Biggs that Black Rock belongs to him and as a result, the Biggs can't have a picnic there. In the end, when Big Bad Brad sees the food (once Mom Bigg returns home to retrieve the forgotten food), he changes his mind. Big Bad Brad says he loves picnics and wants to join the Bigg family! The Bigg family and Brad become pals.
This book is a "Hooked On Phonics" series. The sentences are short and contain many sight words, catering to early readers who are just learning how to read. In addition, this book contains many words with "B" that are repeated throughout the book, such as 'Bigg', 'Brad', 'black', and 'bug'. This shows that this book emphasizes phonics because readers will become familiar with the "b" sound. The pictures help aid in meaning, allowing readers to use both the text and the illustrations to understand the story.
