>18 I have mine as The Bible: A Biography; but I cannot locate the copy right now. I generally use what is on the actual title page (not the cover) of the book, as if I were following AACR rules (believe me, I am happy not to have to do that here!), but I like accuracy. I use the ISBN whenever ... I believe the Armstrong book may actually be called The Bible: A Biography.
There is also
- Whose Bible Is It? A History of the Scriptures Through the Ages
- How We Got the Bible
- The Book: A History of the Bible (touchstone is incorrect); by Christopher De Hamel
- ... ... to be interpreted with "charity" or "love" - can't remember whether I saw that in Dei Verbum or in Karen Armstrong's The Bible - a biography or both. I've finished The Bible: A Biography which I found *very* interesting and I also finished Unlikely Disciple which made for a fascinating contrast. I'm considering returning to The Three Musketeers but am feeling a bit saturated with reading for the moment. I also bought Death in the Haymarket ... I am finishing up Armstrong's The Bible: A Biography and then I want to finish reading The Smoke by Tony Broadbent. Both seem to be well-researched. Trying desperately to get through and retain some meaning from The Bible: A Biography and finish A song for Arbonne and The Unlikely Disciple but after that I want to read Why I Write and Clubbed to Death. Apologies in advance to Oakes, as I know she is not one of his favourite authors, but Karen Armstrong's The Bible: The Biography may be an illuminating exercise in investigating the accepted claims of all sides The Bible The Biography by Karen Armstrong - excellent! Has to have been The Bible - The Biography.
Not up to Karen Armstrong's usual standard. Too much opinion given as fact. I got the feeling that she ignored the breadth of modern Biblical scholarship. ... by Laurence Bergreen (completed 17 Jan 2009)

I was disappointed. Although I am used to disagreeing with Karen Armstrong on matters of opinion, I have always before found that what she presents as her factual information is dependable.
