Una storia di sdoppiamento, ma non semplicemente un "io doppio" nella personalità lacerata di Tomodo e Matsunaga, quanto piuttosto il bipolarismo oriente/occidente. La consapevolezza di non poter mai vivere in equilibrio, rifugiandosi nell'ombra di una vita segreta di cui poi torna a pentirsi, tormenta Matsunaga, che in tal modo rappresenta la sofferta contraddittorietà dei desideri. Matsunaga uomo mite e marito premuroso a intervalli regolari fugge dall'esistenza tranquilla e si trasforma in un altro, nel diverso perseguendo ossessivamente il desiderio di un appagamento estetico che sia refrigerio per il suo spirito. Tanizaki ci racconta abilmente il conflitto tra tradizione e modernizzazione del Giappone. ( )
