Dust for Dinner tells a story adequately. It contains nothing special, like Paterson's excellent The Smallest Cow in the World, but this book fills a place, telling for new readers a story of the Dust Bowl. Not one I would go out of my way to purchase.

Genre: Historical Fiction Age Appropriateness: Intermediate Review: This book is a good example of historical fiction because the fictional plot contains historical information that is accurate. Jake narrates the story of his family's life during the Oklahoma dust bowl and their journey from their home farm to California during the Great Depression. In this chapter book, the pages reveal the many troubles and blessings this family endures during the dust bowl and Great Depression. Media: This book is a good example of ink and wash and pencils media because the characters are outlined with ink and filled with various watercolors. In addition, the illustrator uses pencils to add more details to the characters and scenery. ( )

Book description

Amazon.com Product Description (ISBN 006444225X, Paperback)

Jake and Maggy lived on a farm where they loved to sing and dance to the music from Mama's radio. Then terrible dust storms came and ruined the land. The family had no choice but to auction off the farm and make the long, hard journey west to California-away from the dust storms, where the land is still green.

Along the way, Papa tries to find work, and Jake and Maggy try to help too. But what if Papa can't find a job? What if California isn't better after all?

Ann Turner's dramatic story about the dust bowl, set during the Great Depression and beautifully captured in Robert Barrett's paintings, shows how one family stays together during difficult times.
