Patrick O'Brian I agree with a comment above - those who haven't enjoyed Patrick O'Brian might try C.S. Forester's Hornblower series. Better written, and much more engaging.
I'm a big fan of Pride and Prejudice, and I also really enjoyed Jane Eyre and Vanity Fair, so it shows how much tastes can ... Master and Commander by Patrick O'Brian. Even the excellent movie (directed by Peter Weir, no less,) is less a work than this. ... Kurlansky
