When this first came out I wasn't much into werewolves. Or any other kind of Shifter either. Part of it was lack of caring about them and the other part was the irrational dislike I have taken towards canines of any breed. Maybe because I'm so horrifically allergic to them. At any rate I ignored this book in favor of other paranormals even though I was rather interested in it.

As my tastes have changed I've begun to reach out and look at books and authors I overlooked. Patricia Briggs for instance, her Alpha and Omega series makes me a happy girl. When I received this book as part of a prize pack I was delighted and eager to read it...then it got packed away on the shelves and I completely forgot to find it again. Re-shelving began and I found it again and decided to read it right then and there.

I liked this book, but there was something not quite right with it. I can't place my finger on it, though I think it has something to do with the romance between Bella and Devlyn. It's not that it wasn't passionate or that there wasn't chemistry, I think it was more because the two of them made so many excuses as to why it couldn't happen that when it did happen I was shocked. 150 years of living in fear of the Alpha, Devlyn telling her that he has no choice but to give her to the Alpha and Bella being equally adamant against the action...it didn't add up in my head.

As for the other storyline of the red wolf killing folks, that storyline was rather jumbled and thrown together to give Devlyn and Bella a chance to find some time alone. I was confused by its resolution. The problems of the romantic nature were easily taken care of, if anyone had bothered to communicate, and over pretty quickly. The added bit of Bella having to fight to be Alpha Female was unneeded and over quickly at any rate.

In the end, as I said, I liked the book, but nagging doubts clouded me from really enjoying it. I want to read the next in the series and see if maybe it was just freshmen blues plaguing this first book in the Werewolf Series. ( )

In the first book of the Heart of the Wolf series, red wolf Bella has been in hiding for the past 150 years from the gray wolf pack that raised her after she lost her family as a child. Though she loves and misses her adoptive pack, the gray wolf leader Volan wants her for his mate and refuses to take no for an answer. To save herself and Devlyn, the beta wolf she loves, she ran away to live as a rogue wolf (a wolf without a pack), but Volan and Devlyn have still been searching for her all this time. After a little incident in the woods, Bella finds herself trapped in a zoo (in her wolf form) and face to face with Devlyn.
Devlyn never thought he would see Bella again, but after he learns of her abduction and new home in a zoo, he sets out to free her and to return her to Volan as ordered. Unfortunately, Devlyn’s not the only wolf interested in saving Bella from her humiliating calamity. As Devlyn and Bella investigate a string of human deaths in the city of Portland, they realize their love for one another never died. But when pitted against nosy but well-meaning humans, the cruel Volan, and the local red wolf pack, Bella and Devlyn might have bitten off more than they bargained for.
I enjoyed the set up for this series. The red and gray wolves are interesting characters, and I’m anxious to learn more about pack law and life, and their histories and legends.
Bella is an independent woman who’s gone through a lot over the years. She’s learned to survive on her own and how to trust herself above all others. She’s protective of those she cares about and will do anything to help them.
Devlyn didn’t have much of a back-story, and other than him being an obedient beta to Volan and him starting up a business, I’m not sure what his life has been like for the past 150 years. He’s very alpha when it comes to protecting and loving Bella, and with her at his side, he finally decides to man up and become the alpha leader he was always meant to be.
I like the author’s writing style, but the number of sex scenes slowed the pacing, especially in the middle of the book. I’m looking forward to reading more books in the series.

Finally finished this one. It had been on the back burner for awhile. I needed to get it off my list. The ending was slightly more exciting than the beginning and middle because of all the wolf fights. But none of it really made all that much sense to me and I didn't really love this one. This is the first in a series and I might give it one more try with another book some time later, but not now. This one almost ended up as a DNF. I think I'll move on to something else. ( )

She's on the run from a pack leader who wants to mate her. She's only wanted Devlyn and since she can't have him she seeks to find a human she can turn and mate before their pack leader finds her.

Heart of the Wolf is a re-release and having only picked up one Terry Spear book in the past, I decided it was the perfect time to give this a read. I went in knowing little of the story, but having heard good things!

I picked up the story and it starts in 1850 so I was instantly curious about the world Spear created. Were these immortal wolves? Was this the story of the history of the pack? Was this a historical PNR?? Spear's wolves, once they are of age, only age 1 year for every 30 human years. They exist in the world without human knowledge and the number one rule? Never let humans know! In the prologue, you meet Bella, the heroine, who is a red wolf that has been raised in a grey wolf pack after a wildfire killed her family. Volan, the grey pack alpha has decreed that Bella will be his mate, but she will do anything to avoid that fate.

Bella is a scrappy thing and I liked that about her! She is pragmatic yet vulnerable. She is smart, yet not so cocky she thinks she is invincible. Even though she is a wolf, Bella is an incredibly relatable character. However, she spends the first 30-40% of the book avoiding getting raped by so many men (and one actual wolf). Seriously, they all want to forcibly mate her because there is apparently a shortage of females (and a major shortage of red wolf females). She is in love with Devlyn, but fears that he will be killed if she mates him (because all the other dudes will be pissed!).

Bella wants Devlyn but Velan wants Bella. But, that isn't their only problem! Alfred, Nicol, and Ross also want Bella and will NOT back down. Plus, there is a serial killer on the loose. So, you know, kind of busy! Bella wants to protect everyone and that makes Devlyn feel a bit less manly. I understand why his male ego would be wounded, but I also understand Bella's desire to keep everyone safe. This point of contention was the biggest issue between these two. I wished they would have just talked through things. Obviously, Bella isn't going to just stop trying to save everyone so Devlyn's attempts to force her to stay in the car, go to a safe house, etc are irritating. I also wasn't sure about their actual mating-was it official once they had sex or did they have to wait for the moon and change into wolves? Could the other wolves still take her for their own after she was mated? It just wasn't explained well (or perhaps I missed it!).

Heart of the Wolf was an engaging read, even when it made me want to knock some skulls together! The end felt a little anti-climatic after all the build up but it was satisfying! I certainly plan to read more from Spear!
