Rod McBan is on Old Earth, and has been transformed into the Cat Man C'roderick so that no-one will recognise him amidst the robot and decoys.

Lord Jestocost leaves him in the care of C'Mell to keep him alive while he uses Rod's present and economic upheaval to further his aims for the Instrumentality, the Underpeople, and to keep Rod safe.

Along the way the 16 year old in mind sees quite a bit.
