I am still reading Empire Falls by Richard Russo. No wonder it took HBO 10 hours to tell this story! But it's a good book nonetheless.

Crap, I don't know what happened. Anyway, I read Empire falls , which I really liked. It is about a man who is kind of trapped in his life and just lets things happen to him. It keeps going back to the past and you see how he got in his situation and it has a kind of happy ending. I am also ...
I remember being ready to give up Empire Falls a number of times. It just didn't seem to be going anywhere. But I liked the writer's style and I enjoyed the characters enough to keep going.

I would very much agree with Richard Russo for New England. In addition to Empire Falls , many of his short stories vividly capture the feeling of Maine and New England for me.
#6, avaland, I was very skeptical about Empire Falls because it was so popular (yes, I can be a snob!), but it was highly recommended to me by the same person who recommended Bel Canto (which I also was snobbishly skeptical about, but loved) so I gave it a try and really enjoyed it.
