... Safety are both very different from the other Mantel books I've read, and clearly (to me) far superior, but I did find Beyond Black surprisingly moving and funny once I got beyond the surface of the psychic "fayres." Based on what I've read, I'd certainly think dense historical novels are ...

Hmmm, I seem to be alone in my dislike of Beyond Black... Well, I'm planning to give her another go with Wolf Hall at Christmas - we shall see... Congratulations on the 75!

I liked Beyond Black a lot, and since I've ordered most of Mantel's other books, I'll be able to find out whether your perspective holds true for the rest, Karen.

... I looked for A Place of Greater Safety at Parsons (bookshop) the other day but the only other Mantel they had was Beyond Black, and it looked a bit..umm...scary (I am the only person I know who was scared by Flash Gordon at 18!). I'm definitely going to hunt down APOGS after your ...

Beyond Black goes into the BlackHole. Thanks for the recommendation, Rebecca. Now if my local libraries would only cooperate and get every book Mantel has written for me!

... I've read one or two others by Hilary Mantel and they were shockingly different--modern and a very clear style. One was Beyond Black and I'm blanking on the other.

I found Beyond Black in a charity shop and snapped it up. I expect I'll get round to it at some point!

... but i don't think Amazon has them in stock since it says they'll take 1-3 weeks to ship: A Place of Greater Safety and Beyond Black.

I just ordered two more books by Hilary Mantel: Beyond Black and A Place of Greater Safety, as well as another by Sylvia Townsend Warner, Summer Will Show.

#232 Yep, as Rachel says, I didn't get on with Beyond Black at all, but now (a few years later), I'm at a loss to explain why. It definitely wasn't her writing style, so I don't want to put anyone else off! I'm going to be giving Wolf Hall at some point anyway...

... a month has gone by.... wow. None of these answers are going to make any sense. I have copies of Wolf Hall, Beyond Black and A Place of Greater Safety but have yet to read any of them. I know flissp really didn't like Beyond Black, but the last one is meant to be amazing (if ...

#78, I couldn't make my mind up about Beyond Black when I read it. I was interested and intrigued at first but then I just lost interest towards the end. I think my expectations may have been too high as I've loved everything else I've read by Hilary Mantel.

Fleur, I shall probably slow down a bit after January because I shall have other things to take up my time. 10. Beyond Black by Hilary Mantel - Enjoyed this story about Alison, a medium and her business partner, Colette. Amusing and entertaining dark comedy.

Reading Beyond Black by Hilary Mantel - did not care much at the start of this story about a medium and her business partner, but now I'm halfway through and loving it.

Let's not forgot the July/August theme read also - perhaps Hillary Mantel's Beyond Black, which I have not read but which was shortlisted, I believe, for the OP, might qualify (it's a bit of a stretch, I suppose)?:-) Geesh, I'd hate to leave linsacl and juliette07 all by their lonesome over ...

I'm reading Beyond Black by Hilary Mantel. I've never read any of hers before but I joined a reading group for the first time and this is the book they will be discussing next. I would probably not have picked it otherwise (one reason why I joined, to widen my reading habits), but am enjoying it. ...

... (there was a BIG chunk of historical information that slowed the pace for me). Am currently reading Hilary Mantel's Beyond Black for a book group I have recently joined, and Matthew Pearl's The Dante Club. Nice to meet you all.
