This is a fairly literal, scholarly translation of the Koran -with commentary. It is easier to understand than other translations of the Koran I have tried to read. It gives historical context and excerpts from supporting documents to help elucidate the intended meanings. Though I found the prophet's continual complaining a bit grating at times, I was very gratified to read in black and white the truth of what I have heard some moderate Moslems say: that the Prophet Mohamed was much more merciful and generous (especially to women) than many modern day people who call themselves his followers.

Thisis worthwhile reading for non-Arabic speaking people who want to get a 'handle' on what the Koran actually says! (

In the name of Allah, the Beneficient, the Merciful. 1. Praise be to Allah, Lord of the Worlds.

Men are in charge of women, because Allah hath made the one of them to excel the other....As for those from whom ye fear rebellion, admonish them and banish them to beds apart, and scourge them. Then if they obey you, seek not a way against them. Lo! Allah is ever High Exaclted, Great." Surah IV.34:

And Solomon was David's heir. And he said: O mankind! Lo! We have been taught the language of birds, and have been given (abundance) of all things. This is surely evident favor. Surah XXVII.16
