41 - I really liked Bryson's I'm a Stranger Here Myself, about returning to America. I was saving it for a plane trip, but broke it out earlier. I was really glad, because I laughed so hard I would have humiliated my daughters reading it in public. I just finished Handmaid's Tale and have started Bill Bryson's hilarious I'm a Stranger Here Myself. Notes from a Big Country by Bill Bryson turned up today via Bookmooch. It looks pretty good although with my TBR pile I'm not sure when I'll read it! A Short History was the first Bryson I read and I loved all of it. Based on that, I went on to I'm a Stranger Here Myself and finished it only through sheer determination. Before giving up on Bryson, try I'm A Stranger Here Myself or In a Sunburned Country or A Walk in the Woods. The first is his story of returning to the U.S. after years of living in the U.K. The second is his story of traveling in Australia, and the third is about his trek on the A ... ... a Brit and has lived there for many years. My favorite of his is In a Sunburned Country about traveling in Australia. I'm a Stranger Here Myself is his story of returning to the US after many years away, and seeing it through the eyes of a visitor. And A Walk in the Woods is about hiking ... 7. Read this 4 or 5 years ago under the title I'm a Stranger Here Myself and didn't realize it was the same book but I had forgotten most of it anyway, so it was just as enjoyable (at least I think so!) the second time ... ... light or amusing when I need cheering up, especially if I'm ill and just can't focus on anything else. Bill Bryson's Notes from a Big Country always works, and Guy Browning's little humorous collection Never Hit a Jellyfish with a Spade. In fact, when I woke up with a cracking headache ... For me it would be Bill Bryson for A Walk in the Woods, The Mother Tongue, and I'm a Stranger here Myself ... immediate changes to make.
And finally, although his writing can be a bit uneven, who doesn't love the humor of Bill Bryson? His touchstone (sorry, also erratic) provides 96 choices. Wow! Having survived the plague in England through Year of Wonders, I have returned to America with Bill Bryson in I'm a Stranger Here Myself. I'm a Stranger Here Myself by Bill Bryson, used...

He is so much fun to listen to. I remember when I discovered Bill Bryson's I'm a Stranger Here myself. I bought a copy for EVERYONE! It was so funny! They would LOVE it!

I hadn't read any Bill Bryson for a few years; I was glad to see his writing is just as funny as I remember. And I love humorous ... ... thought this was a democracy we lived in and that our leaders were, roughly speaking, an expression of the people's wishes. I'm being kind of ornery here. But that term really smacked of Sixties Marxism than contemporary conservativism.
