... challenge. Send me a PM if you would like to join. The link to the book is here. http://bookcrossing.com/journal/6669650 Kafka on the Shore is what I'm reading at the moment. So I've travelled the world this month, Afganistan to Wales, off to Iran, then to India and Italy now in Japan! Lif ...

#86 flissp: Yes, I do recommend Kafka on the Shore but from other things I have read, it seems to be a different style than his earlier writings such as The Wind Up Bird Chronicle (which I have not yet read, so I really cannot compare), so keep that in mind as you read it. I did bring ...

#84 alcottacre - definitely recommend After Dark. I've never read Kafka On The Shore for some reason - I take it you recommend it then? I began The Wind-up Bird Chronicle a while ago, but got waylaid by a particularly manic period at work, so never finished it - will probably have to ...

65. Norwegian Wood - Haruki Murakami Wasn't impressed with the translation, but I liked the book. Kafka was a lot better, but being shorter, this one was nice too. No fantasy elements, though, I was surprised.

#83 flissp: Thanks for the recommendation of After Dark. I just read Kafka on the Shore by Murakami and was looking for another of his to read, so I think I will give that one a try.

Medellia12 in Book talk : Talking Cats? (Nov 18, 2008, 5:02pm)

Haruki Murakami's Kafka on the Shore has cats that converse with one of the human characters. That's just one part of this large novel--there's a lot of quirky, surreal stuff going on in there.

... by J G Ballard. Just OK. Kept wanting to give up. Didn't much like the characters, though the story was interesting. 45 Kafka on the Shore by Haruki Murakami. Loved this, much more than The Wind-Up Bird Chronicle. Think it is my equal favourite with Norwegian Wood. Didn't really get it I ...

... Boy Who Fell Out of the Sky by Ken Dornstein - nonfiction; recommended (see comments above in message 391) 410. Kafka on the Shore by Haruki Murakami - somehow, I managed to read 2 Oedipal books in a row this week, this one and the one that follows; I rather liked this book, ...

After Nakata left, Otsuka lay down again in the grass and closed his eyes. Kafka on the Shore by Haruki Murakami

... only one I've read but I'm not as enthusiastic as most about The Master and Margarita. Murakami, well to be fair just Kafka on the Shore, left me cold too (I've got Norweigan Wood ready to read someday). Maybe I'm allergic to talking cats! As for what I haven't read. All the rest. ...

#381: Carolyn, After I finish Kafka on the Shore, I will let you know what I thought of it. I am working on The Boy Who Fell Out of the Sky right now, but I will read the Kafka next. The only other Murakami that I have read thus far as been What I Talk About When I Talk About Running, so ...

... and hijack you back! But it's okay to go by and show them who "rules on LT"! ;-) I'd like to know what you think of Kafka on the Shore when you read it. I've read both What I Talk About Running and After Dark by Murakami and would like to try another one. I enjoyed both of those ...

Good luck with Kafka on the Shore--I know it's beloved by most of its readers, but I just couldn't stand the dialogue.

... worth the read IMHO. I had never read anything by Murakami before, and still have yet to read any of his fiction (although Kafka on the Shore is going to be read this next week or so), and even though I am not a runner, I found it to be very good. As far as the homeschooling goes, this is ...

... You can certainly speak with more authority on the subject than I can. I think I decided to try my hand after reading Kafka on the Shore. Maybe my talking dogs owe something to that novel's talking cats. My dogs have a lot to say about hard times, underlining the post-Katrina setting and ...

... about 10 Murakami novels on her shelves and I still haven't read a single one... although a friend has forcibly loaned me Kafka on the Shore. I suppose I ought to read and return it before it gets embarrassing :-)

#101 agatatera: How was Norwegian Wood? I just discovered Murakami this year (I have Kafka on the Shore home from the library right now) and am interested in input on all of his books. Regarding hypocrisy in the church, I think you will find it in any church. They are, after all, run by ...

... So just checking exchange rates won't paint the whole picture... (I just paid 119 SEK/US$15,17 for an imported paperback /Kafka on the shore/... about twice as much as a swedish language paperback. Sometimes... etcetera.) I would be amazed if the mug wasn't microwave safe - only items with ...

... who didn't like it, whilst sometimes there are mixed feelings with some of his other work. A lot of people also really like Kafka on the Shore, though it's much larger than Norwegian Wood. Alternatively, if you are a short-story person, he has a few collections out. Blind Willow, Sleeping Wom ...

I liked Kafka on the Shore when I read it a while ago. I'll reread it again in the not too distant future, and will write more about it then. I'll have a look at What I Talk About, though the reviews have been decidedly mixed.

#88 dcozy: Have you read Murakami's Kafka on the Shore and if so, what did you think? I have it home from the library but have not had a chance to read it yet. I did read his What I Talk About When I Talk About Running which I enjoyed very much.

Alors...?

... not have much of his stuff, although they do have After Dark and I may give it a shot, although I was thinking of trying Kafka on the Shore first. Have you read that one?

Kafka on the Shore? I know I have read it, and it strikes me as Murakami. Maybe it is just the bird talk that had me thinking of The Windup Bird Chronicle.

For cmt & whymaggiemay- I loved After Dark and my first of his books was also Kafka on the Shore. I couldn't quite figure it all out, by the end, but it was such a strange wonderful journey, that I didn't care. I'm now reading a slim volume of short stories by Murakami called After the Quake ...

#3 cmt ~ re Murakami, I've only read Kafka on the Shore, but I'll admit I had trouble getting into it. I loved the writing and the story was interesting, but I couldn't figure out where it was going. At about page 150 I decided that I was intrigued enough that I was just going to let it take me ...

... was like an individual slice of life from the boy's (Alfgrimur) life. I found some parallels, too, in feeling with Kafka on the Shore as I was left mostly in the dark about exactly how the boy's life would continue after the end of the book.

42. Kafka on the shore - Murakami Edit: book meter

... and I've loved the discussions on it already. I love Murakami, some better than others. But the one that I love best is Kafka on the Shore and Norwegian Wood. Has anyone read Shantaram by Gregory Roberts? A huge tome, but I really enjoyed this book. It gave me a very different insight ...

#109 cameling Is Kafka on the Shore by Murakami? If I decide to try it--do I need to read Kafka first? I know about Kafka but I have never actually read him! Franz Kafka is on my "to buy" list but I haven't decided which one yet.

>100: Leuntje, I love, love, love Kafka on the Shore and I'm sure you're going to enjoy this book. I'm really bummed because I'm halfway through Amuse Bouche and really enjoying the book when I discovered that about 15 pages are missing from the book!! Seriously .. I wonder if the person I ...

Finished the tin drum, as mentioned in message 8. I'm currently reading Kafka on the shore - Murakami.

129: Jacey25, I absolutely loved Kafka on the Shore. That book got me hooked to read more Murakami novels. I'm enjoying Animal Dreams and but I've discovered that I should really move my reading chair back to the living room because where I have it positioned now in my little upstairs ...

... Anybody out there? which made me cry 'cause I'm a sap as well as Happiness Sold seperately. Now I'm into Fangland and Kafka on the shore and I suspect I will like the second the most. I picked up After Dark by Haruki Murakami in the train station the other day and was hooked. The Host ...

#189: Yeah, I read Kafka on the Shore earlier this year, and enjoyed it greatly. I haven't read After Dark, though. Although I haven't gotten very far yet, in Hard-Boiled Wonderland and the end of the World it seems like a very good read.

... in love after reading Sputnik Sweetheart, which was lent to me by a friend (I later got my own copy), and also enjoyed Kafka on the Shore very much. Since then I've read Hard-boiled Wonderland and the End of the World, After the Quake and South of the Border, West of the Sun. I also ...

I own both After Dark and Kafka on the Shore, but I haven't yet read them. I started my Murakami love affair with Norwegian Wood, then fell completely in love with The Wind-Up Bird Chronicle. I also really liked Sputnik Sweetheart and Hard-Boiled Wonderland and the End of the World. F ...

... was my first Murakami, and I read it last month. I thought it was great. I've got a few others of his at home in the TBR (Kafka on the Shore, The Wind-Up Bird Chronicle, and After the Quake). So I'm still in the process of becoming a fan, but I'm definitely headed that direction!

... I've read. There's been so many books I haven't even heard of that I'd almost given up playing the game. Has anyone read Kafka on the Shore?

50) Kafka on the Shore by Haruki Murakami--Well, I liked the ending anyway. I've never read a book with such aggravating dialogue, although that could have been the translator's fault. And the Eichmann/Napoleon's Russian Campaign/Beethoven for Dummies digressions really got on my nerves. Of ...

So over the past couple of months I have read several things and a few of them were on the list here... I read Kafka on the Shore and found it far more readable than the first Murakami I attempted (The Wind-up Bird Chronicle). I read The Magician's Assistant and loved it completely. I ...

Finished Kafka on the Shore and starting Never Let Me Go.

#17 Kafka on the Shore Well, I am only at #17 and am certainly behind. I've omitted several re-reads to the list as I re-read them every year when I teach them. So, maybe I'll make the 75 goal--whether I do or do not doesn't matter because I am enjoying the challenge and reading about the ...

46. Kafka on the Shore by Haruki Murakami - i didn't have much expectations about this book, and didn't think it would be entertaining knowing that it dealt with some disturbing themes. However, i did enjoy the quick read. It is fast-paced, has some unforgettable characters, and intersperses ...

Could it be Kafka on the Shore?

Finished The Magician's Assistant Saturday and began Kafka on the Shore yesterday. My second read from Murakami and enjoying it immensely. (LOVED my first Ann Patchett read, btw.) Editing to add, will be reading an Ian McEwan novel in the course of my 888 challenge myself. With all of ...

30. Kafka on the Shore by Haruki Murakami. I really enjoyed reading it, but it's going to take me a while to figure out what i just read.

It's interesting that some find Kafka on the Shore difficult to get into. I loved the novel for its first 100 pages, which I found deeply intriguing and very engaging as well as satisfying imaginative. However by the end I was bored of all this style without substance; it felt like a film made of ...

... I got the book, it smells a bit like cloves and other sweet spices... neat, eh? planned to buy from Waldenbooks: Kafka on the Shore by Haruki Murakami Middlemarch by George Eliot if I get away with just those two, I will be shocked!

Just finished Kafka on the Shore the other day. I'm not sure how I feel about it beyond the fact that I enjoyed it. Once I have time (probably six months from now, at least) I'd like to reread it. It's a fairly tight story, but towards the end I'd begun to scratch my head a bit. It's certainly ...

#25: Kafka on the Shore, finally. This is going to warrant a reread at some point in the not-too-distant future. Perhaps in early 2009.

#24: New Moon I swear, and I mean it this time, that I'm not reading anything else until I finish Kafka on the Shore. That includes the copy of Eclipse that I have sitting around waiting for me. The Cullens will have to wait a few more days.
