When an elderly man is stabbed to death in an elevator and a crewman on an Italian fishing trawler is machine-gunned by a Tunisian patrol boat off Sicily's coast, only Inspector Montalbano, with his keen insight into human nature, suspects the link between the two incidents. His investigation leads to the beautiful Karima, an impoverished housecleaner and occasional prostitute, whose young son steals other schoolchildren's midmorning snacks. Semplicemente stupendo e aggiungere altro sarebbe solo un’inutile ripetizione di quanto di meglio si possa dire di uno scrittore unico, di un libro imperdibile e di una serie tanto famosa quanto amata. ( )

3rd Inspector Montalbano book. A man is murdered in the elevator of his apartment building and a Tunisian man on a fishing boat is killed by a patrol boat are linked via a prostitute, who then disappears herself. Dogged pursuit of justice and the truth causes Montalbano to challenge the Sicilian secret police and brings him an adopted son. ( )

Inspector Montilbano is definitely growing on me. Or maybe he is growing up. ( )

Mimi Augello is called out when a man is shot on a fishing boat, claiming it occurred in international waters. Montalbano investigates a man's death on an apartment building elevator. A woman tied to the investigation disappeared, but when Montalbano hears of a child stealing lunches, he suspects it is the woman's hungry child. Montalbano's relationship with Livia continues in this installment. I listened to the audio version read by Grover Gardner because of his superb narration of the series even though I own the paperback. ( )

I'd mark this one slightly higher than The Terra Cotta Dog. Montalbano is faced with three problems: a man killed in an elevator, a man shot on a fishing boat, and a young boy that is stealing lunches. Of course, they are all connected. The story reveals a lot about Montalbano's character. ( )

He woke up in a bad way.

(translated by Stephen Sartarelli, 2003)
