This is the first volume in the "Thoroughbred Legends" series published by The Blood Horse, and it is written by Edward L. Bowen, who has previously written many fine books and articles related to horse racing. This book includes some information on Man o' War's breeding and youth as well as his history on the racetrack, and also contains a synopsis of his career at stud after his racing days are over. One of the best parts of the book is the section of photos in the center, which show Man o' War's horse relatives, his owners and trainers, and some action shots of him running. However, the book overall was dry - the author failed to inspire me with his descriptions of the races. I felt there was too much about the people (Sam Riddle, August Belmont, and others) and not enough about the horse. Perhaps Mr. Bowen thought enough has already been written about the horse, and it's true that most of the other works gloss over the importance of the humans involved. Still, for a story as glamorous and exciting as Man o' War, the book was too heavy and dull. ( )
