I really tried reading this book but could not get into it. ( )

Pretty good chick lit story of two sisters, actually half-sisters, reared on a farm Canada by their father after their mother commits suicide. One sister is wild and selfish and the other lives somewhat in her shadow, trying to do the right thing. It was a pretty predictable book but it had its moments. ( )

Halfway through I got really bored with the book and found myself skipping paragraphs just to finish it. ( )

At first I thought, oh oh, just chicklit. But the story is complex, thoughtful, and well written. Two sisters who have taken distinctly different paths (think [In Her Shoes]) and whose lives and past loves come into huge conflict. Well conceived, with an ending that gives photo-hints of the future that satisfy but do not absolutely define. Both sisters are loveable but frustrating, I want to hug them and slap them both.
Peachy's domestic life, especially with her epileptic son, her dilemmas of decisions about her relationships with her sister and husband, always overshadowed by the needs of her sons; Beth's wild ride as a designing diva in NY, set against the hippy Cdn farm, sexual tension....make for a very good read. Amazon.com Product Description (ISBN 0743255860, Paperback)

Georgia "Peachy" Archer always thought she was happy with her choices in life: quitting college, marrying young, raising two boys in the same small town where she grew up. But just as Peachy's life is beginning to settle into a careful routine, her sister's life begins to dangerously unravel.

Beth Archer chose a different life: fancy apartment in Manhattan, fancy friends, making lots of money. She's been on her own since she was a teenager, and she's still on her own, outgrowing dress styles and boyfriends faster than Peachy can inherit them. But on a visit home one weekend, Beth upends everything Peachy thought she knew about being happy.

In the tradition of Jennifer Weiner and Melissa Bank, The Almost Archer Sisters is a refreshingly honest portrait of sisterhood, motherhood, and female mayhem in its many states of grievance, grace, and forgiveness.

There were never such devoted sisters, or ones so hilariously and heartbreakingly conflicted about loyalty. Thoughtful, married-mom Georgie "Peachy" Archer and big-city-sister Beth, grow up on a Canadian farm with their hairdressing, Vietnam draft-dodging dad, Lou, and share the pain of their mom's suicide. But that's where the similarities end. They have always supported each other---until Peachy's husband Beau cheats on her with her sister. That's when Peachy leaves Beth to cope on the farm and goes to live Beth's life on the fast track in NYC for a weekend.… (more)
