If I had known at the time that Haruki Murakami's novels existed, I probably would've loved them. Norwegian Wood is his most approachable (no magical realist-y elements), but again, some sex.

Without giving anything away, I would say that Norwegian Wood is a very different novel from the two you'v read.

Go for Master and Margarita as it's a modern classic and really excellent. I also nudge Wild Berries, and Norwegian Wood . The latter is not Murakami's best -The Wind up Bird Chronicle imo is his masterpiece-, but it's a good portrait of modern Japan and deliciously weird.

Norwegian Wood is my favourite. The overall plot of the trio really tugs at my psyche.
Kafka On The Shore is the worst so far (still got a couple to read), mainly because of the incest, I guess.
... The discussion in last weeks thread on why (or why not) people don't like Murakami was interesting for me - I started with Norwegian Wood which is apparently his most "mainstream" book. I enjoyed that, so I'm trying out some of his others.
Wow. Just checked the internet for the Norwegian Wood boxed set! Abebooks has it for US$ 292.50! I'm not that vain! Maybe it'll turn up on a bookswap, and someone won't know any better, and I'll get it for one point!

... my vote, although Kafka on the Shore lacks some of the bizareness of the earlier novels. The red and green box edition of Norwegian Wood is one of my nicest looking books.
