( Aleksandr Nevskij, Urss 1938, b/n, 111') Sergej M. Ejzenštejn. Con Nikolaj terkasov, Nikolaj Ochlopkov, Aleksandr Abrikosov, Dimitrij Orlov, Varvara Massalitinova. Guidato dal principe Aleksandr Nevskij (Cerkasov), l'esercito russo riesce a respingere l'invasione dei cavalieri teutonici nella battaglia sul lago Peipus ghiacciato (5 aprile 1242). Prodotto con chiaro spirito antinazista, il film è il ritratto di un eroe positivo capace di guidare la riscossa (militare e politica) del popolo: evidente il riferimento a Stalin e al suo ruolo-guida nella vita politica sovietica. I condizionamenti del realismo socialista portano Ejzenštejn ad accantonare le ricerche formali dei suoi primi film con l'eccezione della lunga scena della battaglia (37', fotografata da Eduard Tissè dove il confronto tra i due eserciti diventa scontro astratto di masse, volumi e linee (la scena fu girata d'estate con lastre di ghiaccio artificiale). Allo stesso modo, il sonoro viene utilizzato soprattutto come contrappunto musicale alle immagini (la colonna fu scritta da Prokofev) e non per «dare la parola» a: personaggi, i cui dialoghi, condizionati dalla committenza statale, suonano falsi e propagandistici.
