I enjoyed this one. I was able to predict both the involvement of both the Preservers and the Guardian of Forever, but that's not a criticism. It merely shows that the Diane Carey knows her Star Trek inside out. The involvement of Dr James L Kirkland, a dinosaur specialist gives some good additional specialist knowledge and it's always good to have that expertise in an SF novel. ( )

Diane Carey has Kirk and crew using the Guardian of Forever to restore his reality when the timeline has been changed so that the dinosaurs still roam the earth. I found this an enjoyable ride. Diane Carey wrote some of the better pro Star Trek novels. I love her Best Destiny, a coming of age novel about the young Jim Kirk, and that's a favorite among many fans I know. I wouldn't count this as big a favorite, but Carey knows and loves these characters and it shows. Plus, hey, dinosaurs! ( )

A fascinating Star Trek adventure in which the Captain and crew use the Guardian of Forever to travel back in time to prehistoric Earth, to thwart a Klingon project which has deflected the asteroid that wiped out the dinosaurs, effectively establishing them as the dominant species. No real surprises; you know all along what Kirk has to do, and that it will be accomplished, but Diane Carey is so deft, and throws in so much authenticity with the help of her co-writer, that the book is a thoroughly engrossing adventure, with some of the same resonance as "The Jetsons Meet the Flintstones". While testing a new shielding device, the "U.S.S. Enterprise" TM is caught in the middle of a Klingon/Romulan battle. The "Enterprise" crew rescues a lifepod, and they are confronted by a Klingon who claims to know nothing of human existence. Convinced the Klingon is telling the truth, Captain Kirk hurries to Starfleet Headquarters in search of answers. But upon arriving on Earth, the "Starship Enterprise" crew finds that Earth is a vast jungle-like paradise where large, reptillian animals rule, with no signs of human life anywhere. Kirk must travel to the past in search of the key to the mystery, or face the destruction of the human race.
