I'm not sure where the title comes from, but this book is all about Dr. McCoy. His past before Starfleet, his early days in Starfleet are all set against one of the last missions of the Enterprise before they all retired. Set after the Star Trek: Nemesis movie. ( )

I read it 2 or 3 times before it disappeared from my bookshelf. Bones was always one of my favorite characters, and this story really stuck with me. ( )

McCoy is an often-overlooked member of the Star Trek triumvirate, and this book richly remedies that with a plot dealing with the Enterprise's mission to mediate a peace on a planet where assassination is a time-honored and highly-skilled tradition. McCoy is disconcerted to find that his ex-wife, whom he still loves and is whom he fled to Star Fleet to forget, is a member of the mediation team with her husband. What follows does much to expand on McCoy's character, past and motivations. It's also quite a good story. ( )
