132, that's wierd - I'm 150 pages into Kavalier and Clay and I'm really enjoying it. I also dug out The Golem to follow it up with. Northanger Abbey was a delight, in the end, and very funny, indeed.

My girlfriend is going through Chandler novels like they're going out of style. She also started reading Kavalier and Clay

... large tome. I have a few biggies on the shelves too: The Wizard of the Crow, Kristin Lavransdatter and The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier and Clay. A category of their own is a good idea.

... suggestions for good novels about Judaism, Israel, by Israeli authors, etc which aren't so depressing. I had thought of The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier and Clay and The Girl from Foreign. Any other suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

avatiakh Clay is a dark tale. It isn't one of my favorites, still I would recommend reading it.

The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier and Clay, for at least the third time. It had been years since I last read it - lent it to my mother to try to get her to read it (unsuccessfully) and only recently recovered my copy. I'd almost forgotten just how good it is.

... Women of Algiers in Their Apartment, and April and Oliver. I think I will try to read Dracula before Halloween. Kavalier and Clay is one of my favorites - I was kind of sad for it to end. This: "Hated Moby Dick" does not help me. I keep trying to get pumped up to read it one day ...

... and the ending is left somewhat open. I enjoyed it more than another of Almond’s works, but I have enjoyed Skellig and Clay more in the reading. Killing Castro by Lawrence Block is another Hard Case Crime by a master of the genre. Block better be a master because in the 204 pages of ...

>86 Linda - I had the same experience with The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier and Clay. It went really slowly for me until I got a good 100-150 pages in. Once I got into the flow of the book, it read more quickly, but it definitely wasn't one that I read in one big long marathon. I'd read 50 ...

#136 teelgee I read Amazing Adventures of Kavalier and Clay soon after it came out. It was a selection for the reading group to which I belong. The best part of the book was the first part in which the author incorporated the Golem story. I will confess that I wasn't that enamoured with the ...

Having just finished having Amazing Adventures with Kavalier and Clay in New York City, I'm returning to the sedate meditations of Gilead Iowa.

... book. I am loving Gilead, much to my surprise. But will have to put it aside to allow myself enough time to read The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier and Clay for my book group next week. It's a chunkster.

What a fun set of books you've read. I'm not fond of Kavalier and Clay because it seemed to end repeatedly, but others love it. I have to laugh about Moby Dick because, for some weird reason, I have three copies and have never finished it. However, I read on a thread in this group last year a ...

I agree with Cliff on Kavalier and Clay. Finishing it was, for me, a discipline, not a pleasure.

chamberk in Literary Snobs : That 10% (Jun 19, 2009, 3:20pm)

Maybe it's just me being a fanboy, but I think The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier and Clay could eventually become a classic. It's gorgeously written, but not overwrought in its prose. It's a love letter of sorts to another era, and to a particular genre, but still manages to keep the focus on ...

I liked Chabon's The Final Solution: A Story of Detection for the prose style, which I thought was very classy. Kavalier and Clay is quite different in style but I was in awe of Chabon's ability to keep me fascinated for the entire length of this hefty book.

I haven't decided not to try Kavalier and Clay, but I have to say that I started reading Gentlemen of the Road when it was serialized in the New York Times Magazine and I really really wanted to like it . . . but I just could get into Chabon's style and gave up. But it would be boring if we ...

I read Kavalier and Clay this summer and loved it as well. There are so many aspects of the story that I feel like it appeals to a wide range of people. It sucked me in instantly, and I couldn't get enough.
