Tense psychological thriller. Nasty psycho. Some upsetting violence, but also interesting relationships, characters revealed. ( )

Jamie Kellog made a big mistake, one that could prove to be fatal. After learning that her boyfriend is, in fact, a married man and after years of not being the favored daughter of a judgmental mother, Jamie throws caution to the wind and picks up a handsome stranger in a Florida bar. Brad is thoughtful, passionate and almost too good to be true. He convinces Jamie that what she needs is some time for herself away from her stressful life and she impulsively agrees to a road trip with Brad to visit his young son in Ohio. While the trip starts out as a fun, spontaneous lark it soon turns into a terror filled nightmare with a violent man who is not quite who he claims to be.

In Dayton, Ohio, on Mad River Road, two young single mothers, Lily and Emma, have formed a new friendship that includes their two 5-year old boys. Neither of these woman are completely honest, both seeming to cover up tragedy and danger from their pasts. Brad is headed to Mad River Road to confront one of these women and seek revenge on her for fleeing with his child after she had him thrown in prison for domestic abuse. A bruised and terrified Jamie is along for the ride and dreads what she will have to do to keep herself alive.

The suspense in this book was amazing and it really was difficult to know which of the two women Brad was coming for. My problem with the story was the unbelievably cruel male character of Brad; he is sickeningly sadistic to women and that was very difficult to read. The mystery was a good one, though.

Women can become easy victims if they are emotionally bankrupt enough. I had urge to wring one of the character's necks for their stupidity. This is my favorite Joy Fielding book so far. Virtually every twist and turn was more a jerk and a spin. Very suspenseful. The ending was a little too cut and dry for me. But definitely a good read. ( )

New York Times bestselling author

puts suspense into high gear, taking readers on a seductively twisting thrill ride into the heart of danger and desire -- to a place where nothing is as it seems.

She found the perfect lover. . . . Jamie Kellogg's life is at a crossroads. Stuck in a dead-end job, the divorced twenty-nine-year-old has been ruled by the voices of her judgmental mother and her perfectionist sister long enough. Now she's hearing only the sexy whispers of the thrillingly handsome stranger in her bed, the man she met in a Florida bar. His name is Brad Fisher, and he's telling her everything she's been dying to hear: She's gorgeous. She's smart. She's adventurous. Quitting her job and joining Brad on a spontaneous road trip, Jamie's ready for the ride of her life. But this trip has one destination: a run-down Ohio house on Mad River Road, where vengeance will come home at last -- and where someone will pay for the secrets and lies of the past. . . .

"After spending a year in prison, Ralph Fisher has explicit plans for his first night of freedom: tonight, someone will be held accountable. He goes to murderous lengths to obtain the address of his former wife - the woman be blames for his fate and against whom he has sworn vengeance. Determined to bring her to his idea of justice, Ralph's next step is to travel from Florida's sandy beaches to Dayton, Ohio, where his ex-wife is struggling to make ends meet on Mad River Road."."Also in Florida, Jamie Kellogg wakes from an agonizing nightmare of her mother's funeral, and assesses her life: a pretty but unaccomplished twenty-nine-year-old woman in a dead-end job, with an ex-husband in Atlanta, a married lover in the hospital, and a virtual stranger in her bed. But this stranger is everything the previous men in her life weren't: tender, attentive, and adventurous. After convincing Jamie to quit her miserable job and ditch her judgmental, perfectionist sister, he proposes a romantic getaway. While Jamie wonders if this thrilling man might finally be her Prince Charming, they plan a road trip to visit his son, who lives with his mother on a street called Mad River Road."--BOOK JACKET.… (more)
