The Dragon Scroll by I.J. Parker (LongDogMom)
LongDogMom: This is the first book in the Akitada historical mystery series set in 11th Century Imperial Japan. It's similar in style to Rowland's Sano books albeit set in an earlier time, but if you enjoy the Sano series I think you will also love the Akitada books by I.J. Parker. Best to read them in order, but beware...they were published and listed out of chronological order. This is the first book in the series and like the Sano series, Akitada's life and career evoles along with each book in the series.… (more)

Just when I began to grow tired of LJR's formulaic mysteries...this one brought psychological twists and turns! How did the shogun act so out of character (which I loved)? How did events transpire with Lord Matsudaira and Yanagisawa? And from a feminist perspective, what does it mean that Reiko has been relegated back to a traditionally passive role?

Now I cannot wait for the next book! ( )

It is interesting in its own way to see how (perhaps) investigators determined cause of death in the time before modern forensic science.

The actual book, though, could not compare to Clavell's _Shogun_ in either the drama, suspense, or depicting life in Japan: the culture, mores, etc.

If you haven't read _Shogun_, this is quite well written and readable...but don't expect much of a fashion-log, or descriptions of interior decoration, etc. It does introduce concepts like "bushido" and "shinto" but with no explanation in any depth of what they mean.

The best of an enjoyable series. It can be confusing if you don't read them in the right order. ( )

Rowland's 13th book in this long running series, set in Japan in the 1700's, encompasses Shinto shrines, shoguns, political intrigue, power struggles, assassination attempts, fire and of course an unidentified body. The samurai detective, Sano Ichiro, in a fierce rivalry with Lord Matsudaira must protect his family from attack, avoid a war, and identify the skeleton that appears to be the Shogun's long lost cousin.

To solve the mystery San Ichiro delves into the past, examining the events of the fire that destroyed Edo 43 years ago and unearthing secrets that threaten his family and the stability of the court. This is a historical mystery with a complicated plot and a well-developed cast of supporting characters. An unexpected pleasure to read prompting readers to locate earlier books in the series.

Amazon.com Product Description (ISBN 031237948X, Hardcover)

Japan, March 1700. Near a Shinto shrine in the hills, a windstorm knocks down a tree to uncover a human skeleton, long buried and forgotten. Meanwhile, in the nearby city of Edo, troops ambush and attack Lady Reiko, the wife of Sano Ichiro, the samurai detective who has risen to power and influence in the shogun’s court. The troops who attacked Reiko appear to belong to Sano’s fiercest enemy, Lord Matsudaira, who denies all responsibility. But if the rivals are not to blame for each other’s misfortune, who is?

Just as Sano’s strife with Matsudaira begins to escalate to the brink of war, the shogun orders Sano to investigate the origins of the mysterious skeleton, buried with swords that identify it as belonging to the shogun’s cousin, who disappeared forty years earlier on the night that a cursed kimono touched off a fire that nearly destroyed the city.

Suddenly, Sano and Reiko are forced to confront dangerous, long-buried secrets that expose Sano’s own mother as the possible culprit. The shogun gives Sano and Reiko just three days to clear her name—or risk losing not only their position at court but their families’ lives.
