Fifth edition of a standard guidebook for researchers who use documentary evidence. Lots of sane advice. As of this edition, the author still didn't know what to make of personal computers, and the stuffy discussion of "word processing" is amusing in hindsight, at least to me. Reminds me of the days when the main dichotomy was between "IBM-compatible" and "Macintosh" computers. But the book as a whole is one that I often revisit.

I have grown immensely as a writer by reading this book. It's as useful to the writer as Strunk and White--it provides the prose for S&W's poetry. ( )

Amazon.com Book Description (ISBN 0155625136, Paperback)

This classic introduction to the techniques of research and the art of expression is used widely in historiography courses, but it is also appropriate for writing and research methods courses in many departments other than history. This book thoroughly covers every aspect of research from the selection of a topic, through the methods of finding and verifying data, writing and revising, to preparing a manuscript for publication. It offers invaluable guidance on using all major research sources and effectively reporting the results of research. The Fifth Edition focuses on writing and critical thinking skills. Chapter 4 on sources included information on the new library cards and the various databases. Chapter 15 presents new material on techniques of presentation and an expanded discussion of the computer and its uses.
