This is a collection of fantasy stories which is supposed to be a tribute to Tolkien's influence on fantasy. Many of the authors are writers whose other work I respect and/or enjoy, but my overall feeling was the stories in this book on the whole were neither very Tolkienian nor very enjoyable. ( )

A neat anthology of stories. I loved the idea of this, paying tribute to Tolkien, one of my favorite authors. Some of the stories are exuberant and fun, some are creepy, but all are well-written... ( )

I was very pleasantly surprised. Nineteen short stories by various fantasy authors, all more or less in the Tolkien vein; two or three clunkers (Dennis McKiernan, Mike Resnick), but the average being very good and several excellent - Stephen Donaldson, Gregory Benford, and a particularly impressive foray by John Brunner, who eschewed the fantasy setting chosen by most of the others and wrote a piece set in England in 1921. I had read the Terry Pratchett piece somewhere else ("She's always going on about billy goats. I have no knowledge whatsoever about billy goats") but I am surprised not to have encountered any of the others before - this collection was published in 1992 for the centenary of Tolkien's birth. Perhaps that just shows how little fantasy I read as compared to sf. ( )

This book offers a surprisingly wide range of styles by some excellent fantasy writers. There are only a couple throwaway stories in this collection, which covers well over 400 pages. ( )

An extremely good collection with a wide range of stories that pay homage rather than imitate.

Book description
With The Lord of the Rings, J. R. R. Tolkien invented modern fantasy. In honor of the 100th anniversary of his birth, a group of his literary descendants each contributed an original story to this anthology. Included are works by Stephen R. Donaldson, bestselling author of The One Tree; Peter S. Beagle, author of The Last Unicorn; and Patricia S. McKillip, author of the Riddlemaster of Hed trilogy. Here also are tales from bestsellers Terry Pratchett, Andre Norton, and Dennis L. McKiernan; award-winners Robert Silverberg, Elizabeth Ann Scarborough, Mike Resnick, Gregory Benford, John Brunner, Poul Karen Anderson, and Barry N. Malzberg; masters such as Charles de Lint, Jane Yolen, Karen Haber, and Harry Turtledove; and two of modern fantasy's most acclaimed stars: Judith Tarr, author of The Dagger and the Cross, and Emma Bull, author of War for the Oaks.
