For now, this is the final volume of the Distant Soil saga...with a brief promise at the end that all will be resolved with A Distant Soil: Requiem. Let's hope that this comes to pass. In this volume, Liana has been inserted as the new Avatar while Jason and Seren are kept near as instruments of psychological torture to be used against her. The world of the avatars grows darker as Doran lets us peek into a past of abuse permitted for Seren...one that only be spared for Liana for so long.

For this volume, our quest for the group grows hazier, but this makes sense. The original plans are long gone and the group had been offered a trip home in the last book, but declined. Rebels without a plan, their group scrambles and meets up with others that have not had access to the tools needed to rise above their oppressors. Doran writes Coda from a darker place, where things have clearly lost their clear-cut right and wrong, but evil is still evil for evil's sake. She's given our heroes the ability to go to darker places for their cause, but clearly has given the bad guys a toolbox that knows no bounds when it comes to staying on course.

Here's hoping that Requiem sees the light of day and resolves the last standoff... ( )
