Admitedly, when i picked up best lesbian romance I wasn't expecting to read the lest lesbian romance writing in the world ever. My expectations were more towards "Acceptable quality soft core lesbian porn" but that wouldn't make a good book title. The problem with a book like this is the varying definitions people have of romance, I think. For me, a romance story should stir that part of my soul that just wants someone to love me. It should be about an emotional connection, a real respect and love. And there were some stories in this collection that brought that to me, right down to the very tip of my most romantic bone. Then there were a lot that didn't. There were stories that focused almost entirely on sex with almost no emotional content, stories which I would count as obsessive and as portraying stalking more then romance. There were also a few stories about body image that I didn't feel were healthy, such as a story where a woman dropping a few dress sizes leads her to more intense sex, the message being that your partner might love you fat but they'll love you so much more thin.

Still, while the focus was a little more towards sex then I would like, if you were expecting that kind of thing it's not a bad collection. The stories in here are so varied, there are random encounters, established couples, new romances and unrequited lustings. They vary from stories exploring romance in ways that haven't been explored before and stories that play with the cliches we all know and love, both of which have their own charms.

So, yeah, as long as you don't take the title too literally and don't mind that quite a bit of the collection is pornography it's a nice collection. ( )
