This (as the cover states) "Winner of the Hans Christian Andersen Medal" stars thirteen-year-old King Arvid, a philosophical, antisocial insomniac who is forced to take over the kingdom so his father can study the stars. After the King Arvid embarrasses himself, his parents bring Helge, a country lad, to be his whipping boy, someone to take Arvid's punishment. Add a sinister jester, a queen-to-be who falls in love with the wrong person, Arvid's continuing desire NOT to be king, and a lot of talk about death and destiny, and what could have been a simple fairy tale turns into a complex and thought-provoking story.
