It had potential but fell utterly flat. The series started out okay, with a flawed heroine that we felt would progress, and an interesting take on vampyrism. But as the series went on, the books got worse and worse, as you can see because after the third book, they no longer put critic's praise on the cover. Zoey our "heroine" became more and more self-absorbed and slutty. I don't see why she is so darn special, she isn't exactly a nice person. For one, she is kinda slutty, no matter how much she denies it. Having four love interests at the same time, and telling all of them that she loves them just isn't cool. She never learns and just makes the same mistakes over and over. And she brings up her attractions all the time, even when she is in peril. She would be lying there dying and still think "god, he is so hot, but don't tell my other boyfriends I said that". She brags about her powers, which I think are pretty underserved, and is completely shallow. She is immature, as are the other characters and are completely inappropriate. If there is a big bad vampyre coming after you don't you think you should be focused on that, instead of joking around and getting caught up in your own personal drama? Also, about 90 percent of the novel is dialogue, most of it not even relevant, just your average teen banter. The other 5 percent was reserved for Zoey fretting about her problems, without doing anything to solve them. The authors also tried waaayyy to hard to make this story relatable to the modern teen, by putting in so many pop-culture references (Zac Efron, I Am Legend, Project Runway, etc.) that it isn't in the least bit timeless, and will be out of date in the next ten years. The authors must have been held at gun point to put "brown pop" on every page, because I don't know any people in their right mind that would talk about that much otherwise. The time frame was small, probably a couple days, and I just wish it would get on with it. The plot went absolutely nowhere, just added more drama to Zoey's life without any resolution. The authors at this point are just trying to get money, and it is painfully obvious. They even went as far as to issue this one in hardcover, which in my opinion, isn't worthy of it. However, I did get caught up in it, and read it in a matter of a couple of hours, and have a new favorite (Stark). The original concept was good, but the authors got led astray. If you read the rest of the series, read it, but if you haven't started the series yet, don't invest your time in a series that isn't worth it. ( )

This was good, not as good as some of the others- It'll be interesting to see where the author takes this. ( )

This by far has been my favorite House of Night book (that is currently released for public reading). By my previous judgment that I had given at the beginning of this series, I really did not think I would enjoy this series so much. But finally after about the third installment of this series, the story line and characters have dramatically improved. The editorial work still needs some work, but keep in mind that this is a young adult book. Overall, I am very pleased with this series, and will continue to read to find out what happens to Zoey next. Highly recommended book, non-stop action in this installment. Caution- be prepared to finish in one sitting! A++ for a young adult novel. ( )

Zoey Redbird is back in the fifth installment of the HOUSE OF NIGHT series.

When last we left Zoey, all hell (literally) was breaking loose inside the vampyre school. I am sad to say that her predicament has gone from bad to worse.

Neferet, current High Priestess at the House of Night, has declared war on all human beings. To aid in her quest, Neferet has called forth an ancient evil that cannot be destroyed. Kalona, a fallen angel, has risen from the depths of the earth with Neferet's help. He is an immortal who believes that Zoey is his chosen one - the one who trapped him decades ago inside the confines of the earth.

Zoey's task is great. She and her friends will be forced to use their abilities to help rid the world of Kalona once again, and sabotage Neferet's master plan. By calling the five elements, Zoey, Shaunee, Erin, Stevie Rae, and Damien are declaring a war of their own - to stop Neferet and Kalona, no matter the cost.

The Cast duo has done it again! These ladies appear to be an unstoppable force within the world of YA literature. The energy and integrity of the first four novels has not been diminished in this fifth installment. The characters' personalities are as vibrant as ever, and the story remains engaging and original.

Teenage readers will be drawn to Zoey's everyday, angst-riddled life. Not only does she need to save the world, Zoey needs to solve some major vampyre/human boy drama. These stories are surreal, yet shockingly accurate when it comes to teenagers and their lives.

Here's to hoping for many more HOUSE OF NIGHT novels to follow! ( )

Another enjoyable installment in the series. I think this may have been my favorite so far. Now I'm awaiting the next book almost as eagerly as my daughter is. ( )

Okay, well to finish my last sentence would be...this book by far was wonderful. It was an edge of your seat thriller and I had to keep reading (well, as much as could at work...lol) to find out what was going to happen at the House of Night and if Zoey was going to be able to save everyone, including herself.

This book really gives you an idea of what Neferet was really like....and boy, she was one evil little boogey! But now Zoey is having nightmares, which include Kalona telling her that she called to him, but how is she going to stop him and his evil flying Raven Mockers. Which by the way, accidentally attacked her and she was wounded pretty bad. But with the help of Darius, Eric and all of her wonderful friends, she was healed, ubt not quite fully recovered. With all that's going on, there really isn't much time for sleep - okay, when you have some evil man visiting your dreams, who wants to sleep, right?

P.C. and Kristin Cast are out doing themselves as each book in this series moves along. And it all revolves around Zoey Redbird - the Marked child with special abilities to control all five elements. This makes her different and it seems that the evil finds her one way or the other! If you haven't started reading this series, then you really are missing something wonderful. The Hosue of Night novels are YA novels and one of the best series I've ever had the pleasure of reading. You'll be coming back for more! ( )

Even though this is a YA series, i have to admit i'm enjoying it quite a bit. It can be slightly annoying, which only makes it more accurate when you consider that this is written from the viewpoint of teenagers. I find the dialog to ring true- like it or not. I found this series after giving in and finally reading the Twighlight series that everyone was so pumped up about and ended up being hugely disapointing to me. I'm wondering why this particular line of books wasn't contracted for mulitple movies....it seems to have a much better (and healthier?) plot. ( )

So far this series is still going strong, they've managed to keep the plot interesting and the characters likable. Every now and again I wish Zoey was a little less perfect, but she is kind of refreshing as a non-angsty paranormal heroine. ( )

I have been holding out on this review for far too long, and I have no idea why. To be absolutely and completely honest, when I started the first House of Night book Marked I did not think I’d even finish that book, let alone get so addicted to the series. At first Zoey was mildly annoying at best, and the ‘teen’ voice was not at all interesting me (seriously, who in the WORLD says things like ‘bullpoopey’? I’m not fond of cussing, but come on now). Not to mention all the name dropping, apparently in the world P.C. & Kristen have created, any notable figure in society is a ‘vampyre’. Somehow though I managed to get into the book and get hooked. So hooked in fact that I just finished (okay, about 2 weeks ago I finished) the 5th – that’s right the FIFTH – book in the series, Hunted. Like the other four (which will be reviewed at some point before Tempted comes out in October), this one is action packed and full of ridiculous teen romance issues. Hunted however, is less… interesting, and I hope that it doesn’t carry on into Tempted.

It picks up directly where the fourth book leaves off, when Zoey and the other fledglings (Zoey, Aphrodite, Erin, Shaunee, Erik, Damien, Jack, a Son of Erebus, and a wounded Stevie Rae), escape from the House of Night as their Priestess-turned-bad releases an the evil Kalona from his captivity. They head back to the ‘tunnels’ that Stevie Rae and her red fledglings have been staying at, which apparently has been decked out in a lot of high-class appliances thanks to Aphrodite’s gold card. And in the caves, they stay. For pretty much the entire story. Fun right? Sleepover Underground? Could be an awesome title for a zombie book… or not. The biggest disappointment with Hunted however was the build to the ending, that was well, a disappointment.

The review is very long, you can read the rest at http://booknerds.net/hunted-by-pc-kri... ( )

This book certainly had some problems, such as the repetition, some typos, etc. but it was still interesting. It was a lot like the second book where I feel like it was just a bridge between two interesting books filled with stuff they just had to get in there before we get to the real action. Let's hope that's true! I'll be picking up the next book as soon as it comes out. I'm interested to see a real fight between the kids and Neferet/Kalona. ( )

HUNTED is book 5 in the House of Night series. It is important that you read the others before this one. These novels do not stand alone. The book order is:MARKEDBETRAYEDCHOSENUNTAMEDHUNTEDHUNTED picks up exactly where UNTAMED leaves off. Zoey and the gang are regrouping in the tunnels that the red fledglings have been calling home after escaping from the House of Night. An ice storm has crippled the city, making any further retreat impossible. Stevie Rae is badly injured and while Zoey, Aphrodite, and Darius try to save her, Damien, Erik, Jack, and the twins try to secure the tunnels.Zoey’s main concern is stopping Neferet and Kalona from gaining anymore power. They already have the House of Night under lock-down and are taking focus away from Nyx and if Zoey’s visions are correct, things are only going to get worse. After a near fatal attack, Zoey has to be rushed to the House of Night for proper healing. While there, she reconnects with Stark and gets some valuabe information about the situation of the school. HUNTED seems like a “bridge” book in the series. The plot advancements must be needed to set up the next book in the series. So, needless to say, there isn’t a lot of new information in this book. However, Zoey does fall victim to her difficult love life again. *smirk* ( )

Yet another disappointing addition the House of Night series. Get ready for it.....Stop with the summarizations. This is book five. I’m so very tired of reading things I already know. Granted, it wasn’t as bad in this book as it has been with the other novels. But please. That could cut out a good 50 pages of stuff we already know. Are we really back to being the womanizer? I mean really how many guys are dying to get in Zoey’s pants? Is it 5 now? Oh wait the only one that actually did get in her pants died, that’s right, so I guess were back to 4. But seriously, Heath, honey, I thought you got your head out of your ass in the last book! Why the relapse! You know what– I don’t even care that she has four boyfriends, she is vampyre priestess and all that, more power to her. I just want to shake a little or maybe slap her a few times. She is a strong character, why does she need all these guys... we may never know. The first chapter I was good, it was great. I was like alright let’s kick some dark angel butt! But no, I had to keep reading. And it was sooooo Annoying! The dialogue is so rushed, and irregular. I was seriously cringing. “Like oh my god, you so totally did not just say that!” The characters that I once loved, where are they? Damien, sweety, what happened to you? Twins, your not even funny or smart anymore, just annoying– there’s that word again. And don’t even get me started on Aphrodite and Stevie Rae. Where is the bitch that I knew and loved, and is how many times is Stevie Rae going to die, before she really dies? I think that Untamed and Hunted could have easily been one novel. The big climax that we were building up to the entire book *crickets*. Yeah nothing. Lets just hold hands and everything will be all better. WTF?I don’t even know where to go from here. I wish I had something positive to say, but really I don’t and that never happens. Okay wait, it did keep my attention, but that may have been because I just wanted to know what was going to happen, then actually having my attention because I was enjoying the novel. Most likely I’ll continue to read the series, I guess it is supposed to be nine books. I just really hope that the authors step it up for the next book. ( )

Despite the typos and plot holes, I actually liked this book. The whole Kalona/A-Ya (Zoey) thing was interesting to me. The interaction between those two characters was somewhat enticing, enough to keep me wondering if Zoey would cave in. She has a habit of making bad choices with males, so I wouldn't have been surprised. I kept expecting her to blunder, but she held strong. I'm relieved that not every twist and turn was predictable in this particular book.

I'm a bit surprised that Zoey seems to be on the way to living an life of polygamy. I don't approve or disapprove, but it was really bold of the authors to lead Zoey in that direction.

Hmm. What else? All in all, I like this series. I don't think it'll ever be worth four or five stars, but it's still worth a read. ( )

Amazing! It went by so fast! I hate how short the book was. I needed a lot more contend and character development. The end was a little unbelievable. I really enjoy this series but this one was not as good as the others. ( )

Hunted is the 5th and most recent installment of the House of Night series by P.C. Cast.

NOTE: This review contains some spoilers!

I've been a fan of this series for a while now. I picked it up on a whim one day at Barnes & Noble and was instantly hooked. In this book, Zoey's love life becomes increasingly complicated while the world around her seems to fall at Kalona's feet. To be perfectly honest, Zoey's indecision about the men in her life is starting to get a little tiresome. I want her character to be happy and in love (at least for a little while). Erik is, as far as I'm concerned, the most logical choice...and he's smokin' hot. However, his little possessive rant definitely cost him some points. She has history with Heath, but he's just not right or mature enough for her. As for Stark, there definitely seems to be some chemistry there, but I would like to get to know him a little better still.

In terms of the other characters, Aphrodite has become one of my favorites. She has evolved and grown the most which has been really great to read about...and I love that she knows how to crack the whip! Her imprint with Stevie Rae had me laughing out loud. It definitely threw us for a loop. It was also interesting to learn more about the red fledgings and see Stevie Rae becoming more & more herself again. Although Stevie Rae seems to be hiding something and I'm very curious to see what she has up her sleeve.

I don't want to delve too deeply into the situation with Kalona and Neferet because I don't want to ruin it for those who haven't read this far into the series. However, I will say that during Zoey's time with the red fledgings, she discovers that one of them is writing prophetic poetry. This leads to a pretty serious twist in the story and she finds herself back at the House of Night where they uncover more of Kalona and Neferet's plot to change the world.

Overall, I enjoyed this book. Some things were resolved and some were left open for the next installment which I'm really looking forward to. This book is fast-paced and I practically read it overnight. I will say this for P.C. Cast, she definitely knows how to keep you hooked because I'm anxious to find out how Zoey will handle all of this in "Tempted" =) ( )

Moved quickly, wish the girl would get some more depth. But, geez, she's only been a Vamp/fledgling for a few months....it's not easy being a High Priestess in training. ( )

Boring boring boring. I read the first four books in this series at the same time - when read like that its hard to realize that each book takes place over the course of a few days & that nothing really happens, despite the constant rush of events. A lot of this book was just the silly teenage main character being an idiot teenager. I need to stop reading this kind of book. Its not even fun in a mindless way anymore. Its just annoying. ( )
  fannyprice | May 2, 2009 |
I am so, SO tired of the main characters boy problems. Actually, I was tired of her boy problems TWO books ago. And yet, they are still here, being completely dragged out and irritating me to death. Someone please make it stop. I do not even care who she ends up with at this point, just please freaking PICK ONE.

Also, there were quite a few errors in this book. First, in the book cover synopsis Erik is spelled Eric. During the book a characters name is switched with another. And there were a few places where words were obviously left out of sentences. Kind of frustrating.

Even though am I complaining, I do like the series. It is interesting enough, but I feel like it is being drawn out. And if the boy issues are not resolved soon, I may lose interest. This book was hard for me to get through because of it.

Oh, and I have come to adore the character Aphrodite. :-) (shockily) She is by far my favorite. Heath would probably be my second favorite. Even though he is a little slow. (I would really hate to see him get the boot). All of the other characters are just.......there. ( )

Decent plot on this one, although getting tired of three boyfriends. Also, wish the pace would pick up a bit to more than 1-2 days covered per book. Will have to think long and hard about reading the next one. ( )

I love the story although this one seemed to drag a bit from time to time. There were a few errors (mixing of names between Damian and Darius). Also, the text seemed choppier in this newest installation. ( )

Wow what an awesome continuance of the House of Night. I once again truly enjoyed another book in this series and am really looking forward to reading more. Zoey takes the bull by the horns in this one and even though unsure of herself at times realizes her true strengths that everyone else has been seeing in her. She learns alot about herself and finds good inside herself and others. She also learns to fight evil with good. Don't wanna give to much away. Repeating myself here but I really enjoyed this one and am looking forward to the next installment in this series. :-) ( )
  mskeens | Apr 16, 2009 |
This is the fith book in the house of night series. The story starts with catching the readers up and really just explaining the previous book. The book stays pretty slow until the end when things dramatically speed up for Zoey and he friends when they must face Kalona and Neferet. Zoey is again in a love triange (can the girl ever get out?) and imprints with heath AGAIN. This seems to be a continuous cycle with Zoey who seems to keep making the same mistakes. Stevie Rae makes takes on a more leadership role of the red fledglings but is hiding something from Zoey. In the end they don't defeat Kalona just send him and neferet running, Zoey realizes she loves Stark, and the end leaves you hanging with a lot of things. I really hope and believe there should be another one in the series. ( )
