One man "William Billy Budd" who works as a sailor on a warship is a main character in this book. He is a kind and hard worker and handsome person. Since he came to the ship, other sailors became not to fight each others. That is to say he brought peace to the ship.
But he has a enemy in the ship. His name is John Claggart, the master-at-arms.
The relationship between Billy to John is not so good. It became more bad.
It is a key in this book.
The relationship will change more and more.

'Moby Dick' is one of the most intense, amazing books I've ever read, but until recently it was the only thing of Melville's that I'd worked through. 'Billy Budd' appears on the 1001 list, and I found a copy, so I thought, why not?

It was a struggle at times to see the plot for the words, so to speak; Melville's prose is not the refined English that one would expect from a more modern writer. It's full of excuses for why the story is being written, why characters are introduced, why places and scenes were chosen or visited. Nowadays this is all extraneous, and rightly so.

The stories themselves were interesting though, and once I got used to Melville's style again I did quite enjoy myself. ( )

This story is sad story.
Billy Budd is foretopman of a British warship.
He is strong and handsome and charmer .
When he becomes angry , he stutters.
Instead of not speaking, his hands become his voice.
That is only his fault.
There is one important character.
Claggart is Billy's superior.
He hates Billy so he tries punish Billy.
For Claggart's lie, Billy becomes enemy.
What happens to Billy ?

I couldn't say after reading this book.
I think this book's end is pros and cons. ( )

Book description

Amazon.com Book Description (ISBN 0671028332, Mass Market Paperback)

Billy Budd, Sailor has been called the best short novel ever written. In his brilliantly condensed narrative prose, Herman Melville fashions a legal parable in which reason and intellect prove incapable of preserving innocence in the face of evil. For all those who feel themselves threatened by a hostile and inflexible environment, there is special significance in this haunting story of a handsome sailor who becomes a victim of man's intransigence.

Since its posthumous publication in 1924, Billy Budd has become one of the acknowledged masterpieces of American literature.
