... heard Clive Barker say it's his favorite book to read aloud, I thought I'd give Melville a second shot. I was made to read Billy Budd in high school and absolutely could not stand it to the point where I was completely turned off by Melville.
Oh! I also just procured an autographed first ...
I finished Death in Venice today. What a strange, creepy book. Next up for December I have The Story of Lucy Gault, Billy budd and Last of the Mohicans.

#15, istartedthejoke, Billy Budd is one of only two books that I did not finish in my high school curriculum. I hated it that much. The other is The Invisible Man.

Gads...
I truly HATE both Candide by Voltaire and Billy Budd by Melville. I had to read both in high school and it was excruciating.
I do tend to like "classic" literature but those are both excellent examples of all that can be wrong with it. Sigh.
If you want to talk fiction, Billy Budd has some interesting imagery from the early 19th century.
I've been re-reading after 20+ years.
... Dick goes, I had a merificul English teacher back in high school. We only had to read the 'abridged' version. We did read Billy Budd though, and I plan on re-reading it.
