The Museum of Innocence by Orhan Pamuk

The Infatuations by Javier Marías (shaunie)
shaunie: Not a positive recommendation I'm afraid - both feel interminably long and very little happens in either, although both are beautifully written.

Nóbelsskáldið Orhan Pamuk skrifaði bókina Museum of Innocence sem kom út árið 2009.

Úr verður að Pamuk festir kaup á íbúð sem verður hluti sögunnar og lætur gera íbúðina að safni – Museum of Innocence.

Hluti 4213 sígarettustubba sem Kemal safnaði í laumi eftir að Füsun, ástin í lífi hans, hafði reykt þá. Við stubbana eru skráðar dagsetningarnar þegar Kemal náði stubbunum og vangaveltur sögupersónunnar yfir mögulegu skaplyndi Füsuns er hún reykti viðkomandi rettu. (Xinhua/Ma Yan)
Við lestur sögunnar um Museum of Innocence þá hrífst maður af lýsingum Pamuks af lífi millistéttarinnar í Istanbul þar sem vestræn menning er að festa rætur og rekst á við íhaldssama og rótgróna tyrkneska menningu. Við kynnumst innreið tyrknesks kvikmyndiðnaðar sem um tíma er þriðji stærsti í heimi á eftir Hollywood og Indlandi. Sömuleiðis stöðugum átökum hryðjuverkamanna, yfirvalda og stjórnarbyltinga þar sem nýjar og nýjar herstjórnir taka völdin. Allt þetta virðist þó lítil áhrif hafa á auðuga millistéttina sem nýtur lífsins á meðan.

Höfundurinn og stofnandi safnsins, Orhan Pamuk.
Þrátt fyrir að viðfangsefni Museum of Innocence sé á mörkum ímyndunar og raunveruleika þá, en reyndar einmitt þess vegna, fékk það Evrópsku safnaverðlaunin 2014.
Í umsögn dómnefndar segir:
The Museum of Innocence can be seen simply as a historical museum of Istanbul life in the second half of 20th century. It is also, however, a museum created by writer Orhan Pamuk as an integral, object-based version of the fictional love story of his novel of the same name. The Museum of Innocence is meant as a small and personal, local and sustainable model for new museum development. The Museum of Innocence inspires and establishes innovative, new paradigms for the museum sector.
This museum fulfils to the highest degree the notion of “public quality”, from the point of view both of heritage and of the public. (http://www.europeanmuseumforum.info/component/content/article/107-european-museum-of-the-year-award-2014-.html)
Ákaflega merkilegt afrek og sjálfur segir Pamuk að hann hafi mest gaman af því hve safnið verði lifandi í augum safngestanna. Persónur bókarinnar verði nánast sem lifandi verur í augum gestanna og skil veruleika og skáldskapar hverfi og bæði renni saman í eitt.
Að lokum þá bendi ég á að fyrir þá sem einnig sammála eru hrifningu Pamuks af aðdráttarafli lítilla persónulegra safna þá má sjá hér kort yfir „lítil“ söfn í París. Vonandi nýtist það einhverjum vel í næstu Parísarferð. ( )

This is a strange book. I really enjoyed the writing. To be honest, I love the writing. On the other hand I cringed every time the protagonist addressed the readers to talk about his little pet museum. I recognize similar feelings from lovelorn moments in my life, and even the best moments of reciprocal love--the way simple objects take on their own power. That's real.

I know the point is to not be embarrassed and cringe as we share those intimate, even embarrassing moments from our lives. But besides the distraction it caused me every time the protagonist became self-aware to talk about his collection with supposed museum attendees, it was the air of importance and expectation that droves of people, school buses full of kids even, would be going to visit. "The Museum of Innocence" deeply and compellingly explores the interplay between erotic obsession and sentimentality -- and never once slips into the sentimental. There is a master at work in this book.

"The Museum of Innocence" is a deeply human and humane story. Masterfully translated, spellbindingly told, it is resounding confirmation that Orhan Pamuk is one of the great novelists of his generation. With this book, he literally puts love into our hands.

Epigraph
These were innocent people, so innocent that they thought poverty a crime that wealth would allow them to forget. - from the notebooks of Celâl Salik
If a man could pass thro' Paradise in a Dream, and have a flower presented to him as a pledge that his Soul had really been there, and found that flower in his hand when he awoke - Aye? and what then? - from the notebooks of Samuel Taylor Coleridge
First I surveyed the little trinkets on the table, her lotions and her perfumes. I picked them up and examined them one by one. I turned her little watch over in my hand. Then I looked at her wardrobe. All those dresses and accessories piled one on top of the other. These things that every woman used to complete herself - they induced in me a painful and desperate loneliness; I felt myself hers, I longed to be hers. - from the notebooks of Ahmet Hamdi Tanpinar
